Continued Use of R-12

ADVANTAGES
Cooling Capability - R-12 refrigerant (when used in systems designed for R-12) has superior cooling characteristics in comparison with other EPA approved alternative refrigerants.

NOTE: For some vehicles (originally equipped with R-12) in warm climates, R-12 may be the only refrigerant which will provide adequate cooling without performing extensive modifications to the A/C system. Always check Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) prior to performing an A/C retrofit procedure.

Warranties - Continued use of R-12 will not void OE and aftermarket parts manufacturers warranties.

Industry Wide Support - Recycling and service equipment are widely available for R-12 systems.

Recycling - R-12 refrigerant may be recycled on-sight.

DISADVANTAGES
Cost - The cost of R-12 refrigerant is considerably higher than R-134a. A federal tax of 5.35 dollars is applied to every pound or R-12 sold. As the supplies of R-12 are reduced the price will continue to increase.

Limited Supply - Federal law prohibited further production of R-12 after 31 December, 1995

Harmful to Ozone - Scientists worldwide have concluded that R-12 and other chlorofluorocarbons deplete the ozone layer. Ozone loss in the atmosphere is likely to lead to an increase in skin cancer and cataracts and could weaken the human immune system. Agriculture, as well as plant and animal life, may also be dramatically affected.
