CPU - Erratic, Improper Operation

89mazda10

Category 15
Applicable Model/s 1986 RX-7
Subject CPU DAMAGE FROM WATER LEAK
Bulletin No. 084/89
Issued 12/29/89
Revised

DESCRIPTION

Some early RX-7s have had CPU damage caused by water leakage. Some of the symptoms of this damage are as follows:

^ Erratic, improper, or no "beep" warning signals.
^ Erratic or improper operation of turn signals/emergency flasher.
^ Horn does not work or works erratically.

Leakage occurs around a metal flange on the inner body (point "A") under the left front fender. To combat this problem, more sealant has been added at this point during assembly. Protective coating has also been applied inside the CPU.

NOTE:
The part number of the CPU has not been changed. However, a modified CPU can be identified by a lot number beginning with "5I30" as shown.

VIN OF PRODUCTION CHANGE

Additional sealant applied at factory during assembly:

JM1FC331 G0105054 September, 1985

Modified CPU on vehicle:

JM1FC331 G0110073 October, 1985

If the vehicle you are servicing has any kind of CPU related problem, be sure to check for evidence of water leaks and moisture damage to the CPU. If the CPU is merely replaced, the same problem will occur again because the leak has not been sealed. Check the following areas for evidence of leakage:

1. Areas above and around the CPU and area below the lower left corner of the windshield.

2. Be sure the sunroof (if equipped) drain hose is properly routed to drain out of the vehicle.

NOTE:
This is not the cause of leakage, but it is a good idea to check regardless.
If evidence of water leakage or CPU damage is found, perform the repair steps listed in this bulletin and then replace the damaged printed circuit board or CPU.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Open driver's door and look for hole in top inside of left fender (where door meets fender when closed). There should be a rubber weather strip feeding into this hole (see illustration). Pull this weather strip back out of the hole and look inside to get one view of point "A".

2. Locate and remove 4 Phillips screws holding the left side windshield moulding.

NOTE:
The first screw is at the base of the moulding and under the hood.

3. Loosen Phillips screw holding the top left corner windshield moulding.

4. Remove left windshield moulding.

NOTE:
You should now be able to see point "A" by looking down into the top of the fender as shown.

5. Apply sealant to point "A" and any opening between the original sealant and metal flange.

NOTE:
Point "A" may be reached through both the holes in Step 1 and 4. Apply sealant in both directions if possible.

6. Replace windshield moulding and tighten screws back in place.

7. Insert rubber weather strip back in original position.
