SPECIAL SERVICE PROGRAM (SSP03) 1986 & 1987 RX-7 SPARK PLUG

TO: All Mazda Dealers

ATTENTION: All General Managers & Service Managers

SUBJECT: 1986 & 1987 RX-7 Spark Plug Service Program

Dear Dealer:

Mazda Motor Corporation has decided to conduct a service program for spark plugs on certain 1986 and 1987 RX-7 models starting on September 1, 1986.

There is a possibility that the insulator around the center electrode of the spark plugs on 1986 and 1987 RX-7s may crack and pieces of the insulator may fall into the engine, resulting in engine damage such as low compression, etc.

Detailed procedures for this program are shown on attachments I and II. The letter to be sent to the owner is attachment III.

If the subject vehicles are in your inventory, you are requested to complete the necessary work before delivery.

Should you have any questions, please contact your District Service Manager.

Your cooperation in carrying out this program is greatly appreciated.

C. Repairs for Units Already Retailed

1. 1986 RX-7 model (Non-Turbo)

Repair Procedure

1. Check the spark plugs as follows:

a) Disconnect the high-tension wires from the spark plugs.

b) Check if the modified spark plugs are installed. The modified spark plug can be identified by the paint marks as shown in the illustration.
2. If the modified spark plugs are not installed, remove the spark plugs and install the modified ones as follows:

Trailing Side (Upper Side): SD11A (with blue paint) Leading Side (Lower Side): SD10A (with yellow paint)

CAUTION:
Since different heat range spark plugs are installed in the trailing and leading sides, be sure to install them to the correct position. If they are installed opposite, cracking insulator of the spark plug may result.

3. Reconnect the high-tension codes to the spark plugs. Refer to the following chart for proper connection.
