Evaporative Emissions System: Testing and Inspection

SYSTEM INSPECTION

1. On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, disconnect neutral switch connector and connect a jumper wire to both terminals of wiring harness side connector.
2. On all models, start engine, then disconnect EC-AT control unit 20 pin connector.
3. Disconnect vacuum hose from No. 1 purge control valve and connect vacuum pump tester.
4. Ensure there is no vacuum when coolant temperature is less than 131°F.
5. Warm engine to normal operating temperature and increase engine speed while checking for vacuum. There should be no vacuum below approximately 900 RPM and there should be vacuum above approximately 900 RPM.
6. Reconnect vacuum hose to No. 1 purge control valve and cool down the engine.
7. Disconnect evaporative gas hose from vacuum switch valve port A and plug hose.
8. Connect vacuum pump tester to vacuum switch valve.
9. Ensure there is no vacuum when coolant temperature is below 158°F.
10. Warm engine to normal operating temperature and increase engine speed.
11. Check for movement of needle on vacuum pump tester. The needle should not move below 1500 RPM, should fluctuate above 1500 RPM when accelerating and should not move above 1500 RPM when not accelerating.
12. Stop engine and reconnect evaporative gas hose to vacuum switch valve.
13. Reconnect neutral switch connector. Reconnect EC-AT control unit connector and disconnect negative battery cable for at least 5 seconds to erase malfunction code.

ELECTRICAL SIGNAL

Amount Control Operation

1. Connect voltmeter to No. 2 purge control solenoid valve LY terminal.
2. Start engine and ensure there is approximately 12 volts with coolant temperature below 158°F.
3. Warm engine to normal operating temperature and increase engine speed while checking voltage. There should be approximately 12 volts below 1500 RPM, less than 2.5 volts above 1500 RPM while accelerating and approximately 12 volts above 1500 RPM when not accelerating.
4. Disconnect voltmeter from solenoid valve.

System Operation

1. On models equipped with manual transmission, disconnect neutral switch connector and connect jumper wire to connector.
2. Start engine, then disconnect EC-AT control unit 20 pin connector.
3. Connect voltmeter to No. 1 purge control control solenoid valve BrR terminal.
4. Check voltmeter reading. With coolant below 131°F or with engine at operating temperature below 900 RPM, there should be approximately 12 volts. With engine at operating temperature above 900 RPM, there should be less than 2.5 volts.
5. Stop engine and disconnect voltmeter from solenoid valve.
6. Connect neutral switch connector. Reconnect EC-AT control unit connector and disconnect negative battery cable for at least 5 seconds to erase malfunction code.

Evaporative Line

1. Disconnect evaporative hose from evaporative pipe.
2. Connect vacuum pump tester to evaporative pipe, then start engine.
3. Operate vacuum pump and ensure no vacuum is held. If vacuum is held, check separator and the check and cut valve.
4. Disconnect vacuum pump tester and reconnect evaporative hose to evaporative pipe.
