Timing Components: Service and Repair

1. Install chain guide, tighten attaching bolts to specifications.
2. Install the chain lever and ensure it moves smoothly.
3. Push chain adjuster sleeve in toward the left and insert pin into the lever hole to hold in place.
4. Install chain adjuster, tighten attaching bolt to specifications.
5. Install key onto the crankshaft.
6. Install timing chain and gear as shown in Fig. 12.
7. Install camshaft pulley so that the timing mark aligns with the white link on the timing chain.
8. Secure camshaft pulley and timing chain with a wire, and set them temporarily between the chain lever and guide.
9. Install left and right balance shafts into cylinder block. Do not damage balance shaft bushings and journals during installation.
10. Loosely tighten thrust plate lock bolts.
11. Ensure smooth rotation of the balance shafts, then tighten thrust plate lock bolts to specifications.
12. Install the crankshaft sprocket.
13. Assemble idler sprocket assembly to idler shaft.
14. Set the balancer chain on the idler sprocket assembly so that the timing mark on the idler sprocket assembly and the brown link of the balancer chain align.

15. Install the balancer chain so that the five alignment marks on the chain, sprocket and block align, Fig. 13, then attach the idler sprocket assembly to the cylinder block.
16. Install chain guides ``A'' and ``B,'' tighten to specifications.
17. Install chain guide ``C'' and loosely tighten the adjusting bolt.
18. Tighten the idler sprocket assembly lock bolt to specifications, then install the spacer.

19. To adjust balancer chain tension, proceed as follows:
a. Loosen chain guide ``C'' adjusting bolt.
b. Push chain guide ``C'' towards balancer chain as shown in Fig. 14, then pull back the guide approximately 0.14 inch (3.5 mm). Tighten adjuster bolt to specifications.
