Ignition Control Module: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
Performs same function as breaker points and condenser in conventional ignition systems. Igniter contains a transistorized switching device used to interrupt primary current through the ignition coil, inducing high voltage to fire spark plugs.

LOCATION
Left inner fender near coil.

OPERATION
A low voltage signal from the ECU controls igniter switching. When the signal from the ECU is present the igniter passes current, completing the primary circuit to ground. When the signal is absent, the igniter turns "OFF", opening the ground circuit and interrupting current through the primary windings in the ignition coil.
