Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Emissions Maintenance Light: Service and Repair

The ECA computer stores information about vehicle operating conditions that is utilized to compensate for component tolerances. When oxygen sensor, injectors, idle air bypass valve or throttle position sensor are replaced, KEEP ALIVE MEMORY (KAM) should be cleared to erase information stored from the original component. To clear KAM, disconnect the negative battery terminal for a minimum of 5 minutes.

After KAM has been cleared, the vehicle may exhibit driveability concerns. It is necessary to drive the vehicle 10 miles (further with some applications) to allow the ECA computer to relearn values for optimum driveability and performance.
