Ignition Timing: Adjustments

Preparation
1. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature and let it idle (P range).
2. Turn all electrical loads OFF.
3. Turn the A/C Sensor OFF.
4. Connect a Timing Light and connect a Tachometer to the Data Link Connector "IG-" terminal.

5. Connect the Special Service Tool (SST) to the Data Link Connector. Set switch "A" on the System Selector to position "1" and the TEST switch to self-test.
6. To create the test condition without using the System Selector, connect the TEN and GND terminals of the diagnosis connector with a jumper wire.
7. Measure the idle speed.

Idle Speed: 680-720 rpm (P range)

8. Adjust idle speed if necessary.

9. Check the ignition timing.

Ignition Timing (BTDC): 11-13°

10. If the ignition timing is not within specification, loosen the distributor body lock bolt and turn the Distributor to make the adjustment.
11. Tighten the distributor lock bolt to the specified torque.

Tightening Torque: 19-25 Nm (14-18 ft.lb.)

12. Remove the SST or the jumper wire.
13. Verify that the ignition timing is within 7° and 20°.
