Compressor Clutch Relay: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
To provide the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with a means of controlling Air Conditioner Compressor Clutch engagement for improved idle, improved driveability and the prevention of engine overheating.

CONSTRUCTION
The relay is a normally closed type relay. When the relay is energized current flow to the A/C compressor clutch is interrupted.

OPERATION
Based on sensor inputs, the PCM activates the Wide Open Throttle (WOT) A/C Cutout Relay during the following conditions:
- Immediately after engine start
- When throttle valve is fully open
- During excessively high engine temperatures
