Crankshaft Position Sensor: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) assembly electrical connectors from the engine harness.

Crankshaft Position Sensor Connector:

3. Remove the large harness connector from the CPS assembly by prying out the red retaining clip and removing the four wires.
4. Remove the drive belt.

Timing Belt Cover Area Exploded View:

5. Remove the four crankshaft pulley assembly bolts and remove the pulley.
6. Remove the timing belt outer cover.
7. Rotate the crankshaft until the keyway is at the ten o'clock position. This will place the vane window of both the inner and outer cups over the CPS assembly.
8. Remove the two crankshaft position sensor assembly bolts, and the plastic wire harness retainer which secures the CPS harness to its bracket. Then remove the crankshaft position sensor assembly, sliding the electrical wires out from behind the inner timing belt cover.

INSTALLATION
1. Remove the large harness connector from the new CPS.
2. Position the CPS. First slide the electrical wires behind the inner timing belt cover. Then, hold the sensor assembly loosely in place with the bolts, but do not tighten bolts at this time.

Crankshaft Position Sensor:

3. Install the large harness connector onto the CPS assembly.

CAUTION: Make sure the four wires to the large harness connector are installed in the proper location as indicated. The sensor will not function properly if the wires are installed in the wrong locations.

4. Reconnect both of the CPS harness connectors to the engine harness.

Aligning Crankshaft Position Sensor:

5. Rotate the crankshaft so that the outer vane on the crankshaft pulley hub assembly engages both sides of the Special Service Tool and tighten the sensor assembly bolts.

Tightening torque: 2.5 - 3.5 Nm (22 - 30 in.lb)

6. Rotate the crankshaft such that the vane on the crankshaft pulley hub assembly is no longer engaged in the positioning tool. Then, remove the Special Service Tool.
7. Install the new plastic wire harness retainer to secure the CPS harness to its bracket. Trim off the excess.
8. Install the timing belt outer cover.
9. Install the crankshaft pulley.

Tightening torque: 29 - 37 Nm (22 - 27 ft.lb)

10. Install the drive belt.
