M/T
Subject
"SHOCK" FELT DURING DECELERATION
APPLICABLE MODELS
1994 B-2300 vehicles with a manual transmission and a calibration code of 4-49U-R05 or 4-49U-R10.
DESCRIPTION
While traveling at a steady speed then suddenly decelerating (releasing the accelerator pedal) the vehicle may experience excessive "shock". This may also be described by the customer as a clunk noise coming from the driveline or a slight engine hesitation immediately after deceleration.
NOTE:
If noise is the complaint, assure the customer that no mechanical damage has occurred. The noise is created by fuel cut shock and normal driveline slack.
A countermeasure Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is available to lessen the amount of shock. Customers complaining of this shock or noise should have the vehicle inspected and repaired.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Confirm the calibration code is 4-49U-R05 or 4-49U-R10.
^ Locate code on certification label attached to the driver's side B-pillar.
^ If calibration code matches those listed above, proceed to step 2.
^ If calibration code does not match, refer to the workshop manual for troubleshooting procedures.
2. Perform normal diagnostic procedures. Refer to section F of the workshop manual.
^ If any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are stored, repair the vehicle as necessary.
3. Confirm that the vehicle does not have a countermeasure PCM already installed.
^ Verify that the engineering part number F4PF-12A650-MA is not on the PCM. The engineering part number is located just below the bar code label on the PCM connector.
4. Verify the customer complaint.
^ If the concern still exists, replace the PCM.
NOTE:
If the vehicle has a calibration code of 4-49U-R05, replace the Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor with a new level part. Refer to the Parts Information below.
5. Fill out the PCM Replacement Label with the date, dealer number and Service Bulletin number.
6. Install the label on the radiator support.
NOTE:
This label will inform technicians during future repair attempts of the PCM change.
7. Confirm the shock or noise has lessened.
