Malfunction Indicator Lamp: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
To alert the vehicle driver that a malfunction has occurred in one of the system circuits that are monitored by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

OPERATION
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is mounted in the instrument panel and will illuminate when the engine is operating in Fail Safe Mode or when certain Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)s are stored in the PCM.
