Catalytic Converter: Description and Operation
THREE-WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTER (TWC)CONSTRUCTION
Two types of converters in use today are the Oxidation Catalytic Converter and Oxidation-Reduction Converter. Both consists of two stamped aluminum or stainless steel pieces welded together to form a round or oval housing.
PURPOSE AND OPERATION
Catalytic converters promote reactions that change CO, HC, and NOx into carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrogen gas respectively. The metals platinum and rhodium are used as catalysts to stimulate the necessary chemical reactions.
