Ignition System: Description and Operation

Ignition Circuit:

SYSTEM TYPE
Vehicle uses an electronic ignition system with computer controlled spark timing.

COMPONENTS AND OPERATION
^ Ignition coil.
^ Camshaft driven distributor with crank angle sensor.
^ Igniter.
^ Distributor cap and rotor.
^ High voltage ignition wires.

Sensors in distributor indicate crankshaft position and engine speed. PCME monitors these signals, along with signals from other engine sensors, to determine ignition timing. PCME signals igniter to switch ignition coil primary current "ON" and "OFF", firing the coil.
