Ignition System: Description and Operation

SYSTEM TYPE
Vehicle uses an electronic ignition system with computer controlled spark timing.

COMPONENTS AND OPERATION
^ Ignition coil.
^ Distributor with crank angle sensor.
^ Igniter.
^ Distributor cap and rotor.
^ High voltage spark plug wires.


Crank angle sensor is a photo-diode type providing PCME with signals regarding engine rpm and #1 cylinder TDC (crankshaft position). Together with other inputs, PCME calculates ignition timing over the range of vehicle operating conditions.

PCME controlled igniter is a switch regulating current flow through the coil primary circuit. Except for initial setting, timing is determined by PCME.
