Ignition Switch: Service and Repair

***UPDATED BY TSB #T01192, JULY 10, 1992

The engine may not start without cycling the key to the "OFF" position and back to "START." The new design switch is installed from the manufacturer in 1992 and later model vehicles.

REMOVAL

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove upper and lower shrouds around steering column.
3. Turn lock cylinder to "ON" (RUN) position.
4. Remove two nuts holding switch to steering column.
5. Separate connector from ignition switch by gently prying on connector ears and pulling it apart firmly.
6. Remove terminals from existing connector and discard it.

7. Insert terminals into proper location on replacement connector.

INSTALLATION

1. Remove spring clip from new switch. The clip keeps the switch in position during shipment.
2. Press connector onto switch terminals, ensuring that tabs lock securely.
3. Seat switch on steering column studs. The end of the actuator rod must fit into the slider hole.
4. Install nuts and torque to 4.5 - 7.2 Nm.
5. Reconnect negative battery cable.
6. Check switch operation. If adjustment is required, refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES.
7. Reinstall upper and lower shrouds.
