Ignition System: Description and Operation

SYSTEM TYPE
Vehicle uses an electronic ignition system with computer controlled spark timing.

COMPONENTS AND OPERATION
^ Distributor assembly with crankshaft position sensor
^ Ignition coil
^ Igniter
^ Cap and rotor

Crankshaft position sensor is a hall effect type providing PCME with signals regarding engine rpm and #1 cylinder TDC (crankshaft position). Together with other inputs, PCME calculates ignition timing over the range of vehicle operating conditions.

PCME controlled igniter is the switch regulating current flow through the coil primary circuit.
