Timing Chain: Service and Repair
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the water pump. refer to Water Pump Removal/Installation.
3. Disconnect the lower radiator hose at the engine front cover.
4. Remove the hood.
5. Attach the engine lifting eyes.
6. Remove the nuts.
7. Raise and support the engine.
8. Raise the vehicle on a hoist; refer to General Information.
9. Drain the engine oil.
10. Remove the starter motor; refer to Starter Motor Removal/Installation.
11. Remove the 16 bolts and the oil Pan.
12. Remove the oil pan gasket.
13. Remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor.
14. Remove the bolts.
15. Remove the engine front cover.
16. Remove and discard the front cover gasket.
17. Rotate the crankshaft and align the timing marks.
18. Remove the bolt.
19. Remove the timing chain/belt, the camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket as an assembly.
20. Install in the reverse order of removal.
Timing Chain Installation Note
1. Align the timing marks.
2. Install the timing chain/belt, the camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket as an assembly.
3. Install the bolt.
Oil Pan Installation Note
1. Clean the sealing surfaces.
2. Apply a bead of Silicone Rubber in two places where the engine front cover meets the cylinder block and in two places where the rear main bearing cap meets the engine front cover.
3. Position the oil pan gasket.
4. Position the oil pan and install the bolts.
1) Tighten the bolts in five steps:
2) Tighten the four corner bolts to 10 - 14 Nm (89 - 123 inch lbs.)
3) Tighten the remaining bolts to 10 - 14 Nm (80 - 123 inch lbs.)
4) Tighten the four corner bolts to 10 - 14 Nm (89 - 123 inch lbs.)
5) Loosen all bolts one turn.
6) Tighten all bolts to 10 - 14 Nm (89 - 123 inch lbs.)
5. Install the nuts.
Front Cover Installation Note
1. Clean all sealing surfaces and position a new front cover Gasket.
2. Install the engine front cover.
3. Apply pipe sealant to the bolts to be installed in the locations shown.
4. Install the bolts.
5. Install the crankshaft position sensor.
Tightening torque: 8 - 12 Nm (71 - 106 inch lbs.)
