Powertrain Management: Adjustments
NOTE: Prior to beginning any diagnostic strategies, all basic engine adjustments should be verified and corrected as needed.Ignition Timing
1. Warm up the engine and run it at idle.
2. Turn all electric loads OFF.
3. Connect a timing light.
4. Connect a jumper wire between TEN terminal and a ground.
View: Timing Marks:
5. Check that the ignition timing mark (yellow) on the crankshaft pulley and the timing mark on the timing belt cover are aligned.
Ignition timing: 10-12° BTDC (at idle speed)
6. If the marks are not aligned, loosen the distributor lock bolt, and turn the distributor to make the adjustment.
7. Tighten the distributor lock bolt to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 19-25 Nm (14-18 ft.lb.)
Idle Speed
1. Ground the TEN terminal with a jumper wire.
2. Connect the tachometer to the IG- terminal.
3. Check that the idle speed is within specification.
Idle speed: 780-820 rpm (P range)
CAUTION
- The throttle adjust screw is set at the factory and must not be adjusted. Any adjustment will negatively effect the engine performance.
4. If the engine speed is not within specification, turn the screw to adjust.
Idle Mixture
Because an automatic compensation function for air fuel mixture is built into the engine control module, it is not necessary to check and adjust the idle mixture.
