Radio, Stereo, and Compact Disc: Service Precautions

AIRBAG

Component Disassembly
Disassembling and reassembling the components of the air bag system can render the system inoperative, which may result in serious injury or death in the event of an accident. Do not disassemble any air bag system components.

Wiring Harness Repair
Incorrectly repairing an air bag system wiring harness can accidently deploy the air bag, which can cause serious injury. If a problem is found in the system wiring, replace the wiring harness. Do not try to repair it.

Air Bag Module Inspection
Inspecting the air bag module with an ohmmeter can deploy the air bag, which can cause serious injury. Do not use an ohmmeter to inspect the air bag module.

Air Bag Module Handling
A live (undeployed) air bag may accidently deploy when it is handled and cause serious injury. When carrying a live air bag module, point the trim cover away from your body to lessen the chance of injury in case it deploys.

A live air bag placed face down on a surface is dangerous. If the air bag deploys, the motion of the module can cause serious injury. Always face the trim cover up to reduce the motion of the module in case it accidently deploys.

Air Bag System Connectors:

Shorting Bars in the Air Bag System

CAUTION: Make sure pin B is not broken. If it is, replace the combination switch or harness.

When a connector in the air bag module circuit is disconnected, the air bag can accidently deploy due to static electricity. To prevent this, a shorting bar is installed across the 2-pin connectors of the air bag module and clock spring assembly.

NOTE: Disconnecting the 2-pole connector of the air bag module and clock spring will cause a short in the two terminals of the connector. When reconnecting the connector, insert pin B into part A to sever the connection between the two terminals.

RADIO ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM
The radio coded theft protection system will render the radio inoperative if the battery is low or disconnected, or if audio system connectors are disconnected. The radio must be recoded when reconnected. Obtain and record the four digit code prior to disconnecting battery or radio. Complete steps 1 through 3 within 10 seconds or setting procedure will be cancelled.
1. Turn ignition switch to ACC and turn off radio.
2. Press and hold SCAN and AUTO-M buttons simultaneously for approximately two seconds until "code" appears on display, Fig. 1.

3. Press SCAN and AUTO-M buttons again until bars appear on display, Fig. 2.

4. Use channel buttons 1 through 4 to input code number. Press button 1 for first digit, 2 for second digit, 3 for third digit, and 4 for last digit, Fig. 3.

Fig. 3 Entering Coded Theft Protection:

5. With code number displayed, press and hold SCAN and AUTO-M buttons for approximately two seconds until a "beep" is heard. The word "code" will be displayed for approximately five seconds, Fig. 4. After it disappears, the theft protection system is set.

6. If "Err" (error) appears on the display, repeat procedure from step 1. Three consecutive errors, including turning ignition switch to OFF and disconnecting power or radio, may activate theft protection system and render radio completely inoperative requiring service by radio manufacturer or dealer.

FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE
Always release fuel pressure before disconnecting a fuel line. Fuel in the fuel system is under high pressure when the engine is not running.
1. Start engine, then remove fuel pump relay, Fig. 1.
2. After engine stalls, crank engine several times, then turn ignition switch off.
3. Install fuel pump relay, Fig. 1.
