Subject
REAR DEFROSTER SWITCH

APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS

Protege model vehicles with a VIN of JM1BA14**50174967 and lower.

DESCRIPTION

The rear defroster and indicator light may not operate. This may be caused by silicone grease stuck on the rear defroster switch contact points. This silicone grease creates resistance of the contact points and affects the operation of the rear defroster.

To correct this concern, a non-silicone type grease is used during mass production.

Customers complaining of no rear defroster operation or indicator light illumination, should have the system inspected and repaired according to this bulletin.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify the complaint.

2. Record preset audio stations then disconnect the negative battery terminal.

3. Remove meter hood. Refer to the instructions in section 5 of the workshop manual.

4. Remove the rear window defroster switch.

5. Check the continuity between the terminals.

6. If the switch does not test as specified, replacement is necessary.

^ If the switch is not the source, refer to the workshop manual or BETM for troubleshooting information.

7. Connect the battery and reset audio stations and clock.
