Subject:
MIL ILLUMINATION WITH CODE P1405 STORED IN MEMORY
APPLICABLE MODELS
All 1996 B-2300 with calibration codes listed in the Parts Information section of this bulletin are affected.
NOTE:
This modification is authorized only for the listed engines and calibrations. Performing this modification on other engines and calibrations is unauthorized and could create liability under applicable Federal or local laws.
DESCRIPTION
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate with a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1405 stored in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). This may be caused by exhaust pulsation in the upstream side of the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) reference hose. These pulsations cause the DPFE sensor voltage to fluctuate below the calibrated range, setting the DTC. A modified PCM is now available and is less sensitive to these pulsations. Customers complaining of MIL illumination should have the vehicle inspected and if necessary, a modified PCM installed.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Verify concern.
2. Confirm that the vehicle has a calibration code listed in the Parts Information section of this bulletin and that the vehicle does not have the latest calibration already installed.
^ If the vehicle has one of these calibrations, and there is no PCM change label on the radiator support with this service bulletin number listed on it, proceed to step 3.
^ If the vehicle does not have one of these calibrations or has already had the modified PCM installed, refer to the troubleshooting guide in the appropriate Workshop Manual.
NOTE:
Calibration code is located on the certification label on the driver's side "B" pillar.
3. Perform normal diagnostic procedures for EEC-V & Exhaust Gas Recirculation systems (refer to section "F" of the Work Shop Manual).
4. Install a countermeasure PCM. Refer to the Parts Information section for correct part usage.
5. Install the "Authorization Modification" Label and cover with plastic shield.
^ List the date, dealer number, and service bulletin number on the label and install the label adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal on the radiator support.
NOTE:
This label informs technicians of the PCM change if future repairs are necessary.
6. Verify repair.
