APPLICABLE MODELS
All 1996 B-Series with calibration codes listed in the Parts Information section of this bulletin.

IMPORTANT:
This modification is authorized only for the engines with the listed calibration codes. Performing this modification on other engines and calibrations is unauthorized and could create a liability under applicable federal and local laws.

DESCRIPTION

The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate without any related driveability concerns and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305 and/or P0306 may be stored in memory. This concern may be caused by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration. Customers complaining of this concern should have the vehicle inspected and if necessary, have the PCM replaced with a modified part.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Confirm that the vehicle's calibration code is listed in the Parts Information section of this bulletin.

NOTES:
Calibration Code label is attached to the driver's side B pillar.

^ If the vehicle has one of these calibrations, and there is no Authorization Modification label installed on the radiator support with this Service Bulletin Number listed on it, proceed to step 2.

^ If the vehicle does not have one of these calibrations or has already had the modified PCM installed, refer to the workshop manual for troubleshooting and repair information.

2. Perform the normal diagnostic troubleshooting procedures listed in section F of the workshop manual.

^ If any DTC's are present, repair the vehicle as necessary.

3. Verify the concern still exists after diagnostic procedures are performed.

^ If the concern does not exist, return the vehicle to the customer.

^ If the concern does exist, proceed to step 4.

4. Install a modified PCM. Refer to the Parts Information section for correct part usage.

5. Attach the "Authorized Modification label to the radiator support.

^ List the date, dealer number and the Service Bulletin number on the label.

^ Clean the radiator support area where the label will be attached (near the Emission Control Information decal).

^ Attach the label and cover with plastic shield.

NOTE:
The information on this label informs technicians of the PCM change if future repairs are necessary.

6. Confirm repair. Set up the following drive cycle to set the keep alive memory (KAM).

^ Start the vehicle and allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature.

^ Accelerate moderately (1/2 to 3/4 throttle) to 60-65 m.p.h. (97 - 105 Km/h).

NOTE:
Observe all local and state speed limits.

^ Cruise for minimum of one (1) minute at 60 - 65 m.p.h. (97 - 105 Km/h) using steady throttle pressure on a level or slightly graded road.

^ Decelerate in gear (without brake) to 35 - 40 m.p.h. (56 - 64 Km/h).

^ Cruise for one (1) minute at 35 - 40 m.p.h. (56 - 64 Km/h) using steady throttle pressure on a level or slightly graded road.

^ Repeat procedure four (4) times.

7. Retrieve any DTC's and repair as necessary.
