Replacement
NOTE: The oil pan could contain small chips, shavings, and other particles helpful in checking the condition of the transmission and diagnosing certain problems. To ensure that all foreign particles stay in the oil pan, make sure that the transmission is never tipped completely over while the oil pan is still installed.REMOVAL / INSTALLATION
1. Drain the ATF, referring to the following:
WARNING: When the transmission and ATF are hot, they can badly burn. Turn off the engine and wait until they are cool before changing the ATF.
a. On level ground, jack up the vehicle and support it evenly on safety stands.
b. Loosen the oil pan mounting bolts, and drain the ATF into a container.
c. Remove the oil pan and gasket.
d. Clean the oil pan and magnet.
e. Remove any old locking compound from the bolt holes.
f. Install the oil pan along with a new gasket.
CAUTION: When installing sealant-covered bolts, tighten them immediately. Leaving these bolts in a half-installed condition could cause them to be stuck that way, due to the natural hardening of the sealant.
g. Tighten new oil pan mounting bolts evenly and quickly to 6.9 - 8.8 Nm (61 - 78 inch lbs.).
h. Lower the vehicle and add approximately 4.0 liters (4.2 quarts) of ATF.
i. Check the ATF level.
2. Remove the exhaust system.
3. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to propeller shaft.
WARNING: Improperly jacking a transmission is dangerous. It can slip off the jack and cause serious injury.
4. Remove in the order indicated in the illustration, referring to removal note.
5. Install in the reverse order of removal indicated in the illustration, referring to installation note.
6. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to propeller shaft.
7. Install the exhaust system.
8. Fill the transmission with the specified ATF after installation. Refer to step 1.
9. Check for leakage of ATF from all connecting points.
10. Check operation of the transmission range switch.
a. Remove the selector cable.
b. Remove the manual shaft nut and lever.
c. Disconnect the transmission range switch connector.
d. Check for continuity between the terminals.
e. If not correct, adjust the transmission range switch.
f. Connect the transmission range switch connector.
g. Install the manual shaft nut and lever. Tighten to 30 - 39 Nm (22 - 28 ft. lbs.).
h. Install the selector cable.
11. Carry out the mechanical system test. Testing and Inspection
12. Carry out the road test. Testing and Inspection
Removal Note
Transmission (12)
Set the transmission onto the transmission jack, paying special attention not to damage the oil pipes. Make sure that the torque converter side of the transmission is tilted slightly upward during removal. Carefully lower the transmission from the vehicle.
Installation Note
Transmission Upper Mount, Transmission Lower Mount (13, 14)
1. Install the transmission upper mount on the transmission and tighten bolt B to 44 - 60 Nm (32 - 44 ft. lbs.).
2. Hand tighten bolts and nuts A.
Transmission (12)
1. Set the transmission onto the transmission jack, paying special attention not to damage the oil pipes. Make sure that the torque converter side of the transmission is tilted slightly upward.
2. Install the exhaust pipe bracket.
3. Raise the transmission into place and tighten the installation bolts to 38 - 51 Nm (28 - 38 ft. lbs.).
4. Tighten bolts B to 44 - 60 Nm (32 - 44 ft. lbs.).
5. Tighten bolts and nuts A (transmission lower mount and transmission upper mount) to 44 - 60 Nm (32 - 44 ft. lbs.).
Torque Converter Mounting Bolts (6)
Loosely and equally tighten the torque converter bolts, then further tighten them to 37 - 53 Nm (27 - 39 ft. lbs.).
