Bulletin No.
002/00
Section:
05
Issued:
02/23/00
Applicable Model/s:
1999 Protege
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)VINS:
All 1999 Protege with A/T and VINs lower than JM1 BJ22** X0 191527.
DESCRIPTION
No shift condition from second or third gear with a flashing overdrive off (O/D OFF) indicator light. This condition can be caused by a failed shift solenoid (A, B, C, D, or E). Unfortunately due to incorrect failure detection logic in the Power Control Module (PCM), some vehicles will have improper Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0732, P0733 or P0734 (gear incorrect) stored in memory instead of the appropriate shift solenoid DTC(s) as listed below.
- Shift Solenoid A - DTC 0751, 0752 or 0753
- Shift Solenoid B - DTC 0756, 0767 or 0768
- Shift Solenoid C - DTC 0761, 0762 or 0763
- Shift Solenoid D - DTC 0766, 0767 or 0768
- Shift Solenoid E - DTC 0771, 0772 or 0773
Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Verify customer concern.
2. Inspect PCM part number (i.e. ZM02-18-881C).
If part number ends with A, B, or C, replace PCM with applicable part number which ends with D or later. Proceed to STEP 3.
NOTE: The replacement PCM will have the correct logic to now identify actual cause of transaxle malfunction after a drive mode.
DTC P0732
DTC P0733
DTC P0734
If part number ends with D or later, use the service diagnostics illustrated for DTCs P0732, P0733, and/or P0734. A Workshop Manual update will be issued which will contain these diagnostics.
3. Erase DTC and perform the following drive mode to identify actual cause (i.e. shift solenoid, control valve, etc.).
A. Access ATFT PID using the NGS tester.
B. Drive the vehicle in D range until ATFT PID reaches more than 20 °C (68 °F).
C. Stop the vehicle.
D. Gradually accelerate the vehicle while in "D" range and check if vehicle shifts smoothly from first gear through fourth gear.
E. Drive the vehicle at more than 50 km/h (31 mph) for more than 30 seconds without engaging the torque converter clutch.
F. Gradually reduce the speed then stop the vehicle.
4. Check for any DTCs and perform applicable Workshop Manual Diagnostics.
NOTE: If DTCs P0732, P0733, and/or P0734 re-appear, use the service diagnostics illustrated. A Workshop Manual update will be issued which will contain these diagnostics.
5. Verify repair.
