Ignition System: Service and Repair

ENGINE TUNE-UP PREPARATION
1. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
2. Shift the transaxle into neutral.
3. Turn off all electrical loads.
- Headlight switch
- Fan switch
- Rear window defroster switch
- A/C switch
4. Verify that the steering wheel is at straight ahead position.








5. Connect the Special Service Tool (SST) NGS tester to the DLC and select "PID DATA MONITOR AND RECORD".
6. Access RPM PID. Press the trigger key to enter this selection.
7. Wait until the electrical fan stops.


IGNITION TIMING INSPECTION
1. Perform "Engine Tune-up Preparation" above.
2. Verify that the RPM PID is within the specification.
Specification: 650 - 750 (700 ± 50) rpm
If not as specified, adjust the idle speed.
3. Connect the timing light to the high-tension lead of the No.1 cylinder.
4. Verify that the timing mark (yellow) on the crankshaft pulley is within the specification.
- If not as specified, inspect the following.
- CMP sensor
- CKP sensor
- TP sensor
- ECT sensor
- Neutral switch (M/T)
- Clutch switch (M/T)
- TR switch (A/T)
- If the devices are normal, replace the PCM.
Ignition timing: BTDC 9 ° - 11 ° (10 ° ± 1 °) (TIMING MARK: YELLOW)
5. Connect the (SST) (System selector) to the DLC.
6. Set switch A to position 1.





7. Set the test switch to SELF TEST





8. Verify that the timing mark (yellow) on the crankshaft pulley is within the specification.
Specification: BTDC 6 ° - 18 °

- If not as specified, inspect the following.
- CMP sensor
- CKP sensor
- TP sensor
- ECT sensor
- Neutral switch (M/T)
- Clutch switch (M/T)
- TR switch (A/T)
- If the devices are normal, replace the PCM.
