Variable Induction System: Testing and Inspection

VICS Operation Inspection
1. Start the engine.




2. Verify that the rod of VICS shutter valve actuator is pulled.
- If the rod is not pulled, inspect as follows.
1. Stop the engine.




2. Connect the SSTS (NGS tester) to the DLC-2.

3. Verify that DTC No. P1523 is not displayed.
- If DTC No. P1523 is shown, carry out troubleshooting of the DTC No. P1523. Refer to Engine Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Troubleshooting.)
Diagnostic Trouble Code Descriptions

- If DTC P1523 is not displayed, perform the following:
1. Start the engine and run it at idle.
2. Select the SIMULATION TEST function on the NGS display.
3. Turn the VICS solenoid valve from on to off using the VICSV and inspect if operation sound of the solenoid valve is heard.

4. If the operation sound is heard, inspect the following:
- Loose or damaged vacuum hose and vacuum chamber
- Shutter valve actuator (Refer to VARIABLE INERTIA CHARGING SYSTEM (VICS) SHUTTER VALVE ACTUATOR INSPECTION.)

5. If the operation sound is not heard, carry out the following:
- VICS solenoid valve inspection (Refer to VARIABLE INERTIA CHARGING SYSTEM (VICS) SOLENOID VALVE INSPECTION.)

3. Inspect the rod operation under the following condition.





Rod operation
- If the rod operation is not as specified, inspect as follows.




1. Stop the engine.
2. Connect the SST (NGS tester) to the DLC-2.

3. Verify that DTC No. P1523 is not displayed. If DTC No. P1523 is shown, carry out troubleshooting of the DTC No. P1523. Refer to Engine Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Troubleshooting.)

- If DTCs are not shown, inspect as follows.
1. Start the engine and run it at idle.
2. Select the SIMULATION TEST function on the NGS display.
3. Turn the VICS solenoid valve from on to off using the VICSV and inspect if operation sound of the solenoid valve is heard.

4. If the operation sound is heard, inspect the following:
- Shutter valve actuator (Refer VARIABLE INERTIA CHARGING SYSTEM (VICS) SHUTTER VALVE ACTUATOR INSPECTION.)

5. If the operational sound is not heard, carry out the following:
- VICS solenoid valve inspection (Refer to VARIABLE INERTIA CHARGING SYSTEM (VICS) SOLENOID VALVE INSPECTION.

NOTE: The shutter valve actuator rod extends for five seconds after the engine is started.
