Subject:
DRIVEABILITY CONCERNS: ABS LAMP ON / SPEEDOMETER INOPERATIVE / HARSH UPSHIFT / DTCs

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINs
All 2000 and 2001 B-Series built prior to 1/2/01.

DESCRIPTION

Some vehicles may exhibit the following symptoms: rough idle, anti-lock brake system (ABS) warning lamp illumination, inoperative or erratic speedometer, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0500, P0501, P0503, P1721, P0176, P1000, ABS DTC 9, RABS DTC 16, or a delayed or harsh shifting automatic transmission. This may be caused by water intrusion at connector X-309 under the driver's seat.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify customer concern.

2. Inspect connector X-309 for water intrusion by removing the bottom half (male) connector located under the driver's seat outside the vehicle cab.

- If water is present or pins are damaged, remove connector sleeve and proceed to STEP 3.

- If no water or damage is present, proceed with normal diagnostic procedures found in Workshop Manual.

Female side connector repair:

3. Remove driver's seat, driver's door scuff plate and peel back carpet or vinyl lining to gain access to top portion of connector X-309 (female side).

4. Remove connector from floor pan by depressing locking tabs on side of connector.

5. Remove cap from back of connector to gain access to pins.

6. Remove red locking wedge from face of connector.

7. Remove each pin individually and clean.

NOTE:
If pins are damaged beyond the ability to clean, obtain new pins for repair. All pins will require soldering to wire for robust connection.

8. When all pins are cleaned or replaced, install new cap over existing connector.

9. Insert all pins through new rubber boot.

10. Install pins into existing connector (refer to Wiring diagram for correct pin positions).

11. Install existing red locking wedge and seat rubber boot to new cap.

12. Insert connector into sheet metal (floor pan area).

Male side connector repair:

13. Remove cap from back of connector X-309.

14. Remove white locking wedge from face of connector.

15. Remove each pin individually, clean, and reinsert into correct cavity of lower connector (refer to Wiring Diagram for correct pin positions).

NOTE:
If pins are damaged beyond the ability to clean, obtain new pins for repair. All pins will require soldering to wire for robust connection.

16. Install existing white locking wedge and re-seat existing cap to back of connector X-309.

17. Apply dielectric grease sparingly to all pins.

18. Slide sleeve over upper connector and lock in place.

19. Slide lower connector over sleeve and secure with bolt in connector. Tightening torque: 4.8 +/- 0.8 Nm (42.5 +/- 7 lb-in)

20. Reinstall carpet or vinyl floor lining, door scuff plate and driver's seat.

21. Verify repair.
