Ignition System: Description and Operation




- Receives CKP signals from the CKP sensor and generates an internal target signal based upon engine speed, load, temperature, knock detection, and other sensor information.
- The target signal is used to command the firing of the coils. When the coils are fired a kickback voltage occurs and is used by the PCM to generate an IDM signal which is used to determine if an ignition failure mode should be recorded.
