Procedures

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE INSPECTION
TORQUE CONVERTER INSPECTION
1. Inspect the outer surface of the torque converter for damage or cracks, and replace it if necessary.
2. Install for rust on the pilot hub of the torque converter or on the boss. If there is any, remove the rust completely.





3. Measure the bushing of the torque converter boss. Replace the converter if the bushing is worn.

Bushing inner diameter
Standard: 53.030 (2.088 inch)
Maximum: 53.076 (2.090 inch)


CLUTCH COMPONENT PREINSPECTION
CLUTCH OPERATION
1. Set the clutch component onto the oil pump.

CAUTION:
- Applying compressed air to the assembled clutch pack for longer than 3 seconds at a time will damage the seal. Do not apply compressed air for more than the aforementioned time when testing the system.





2. Inspect the clutch operation applying compressed air through the fluid passages shown.

Air pressure 390 kPa (4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi) max.

3. If not as specified, replace parts as necessary.

CLUTCH CLEARANCE





1. Measure the clearance.

Clearance
Reverse clutch: 1.5 - 1.8 mm (0.059 - 0.070 inch)
Forward clutch: 0.97 - 1.20 mm (0.038 - 0.047 inch)
Coasting clutch: 1.0 - 1.2 mm (0.039 - 0.047 inch)


2. If not as specified, replace parts as necessary.

ONE-WAY CLUTCH 1 PREINSPECTION
ONE-WAY CLUTCH 1 OPERATION





1. While holding the one-way clutch outer race, verify that the inner race rotates smoothly when turned counterclockwise and locks when turned clockwise.
2. If not as specified, replace the one-way clutch 1.

ONE-WAY CLUTCH 2 PREINSPECTION
ONE-WAY CLUTCH 2 OPERATION





1. While holding the one-way clutch inner race, verify that the one-way clutch rotates smoothly when turned clockwise and locks when turned counterclockwise.
2. If not as specified, replace the one-way clutch 2.

3-4 Clutch Preinspection
Clutch operation

1. Install the SST to the 3-4 clutch.


Caution:
Applying compressed air to the assembled clutch pack for longer than 3 seconds at a time will damage the seal. Do not apply compressed air for more than the aforementioned time when testing the system.





2. Inspect the clutch operation by applying compressed air as shown.

Air pressure 390 kPa {4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi} max.

3. If not as specified, replace parts as necessary.

Clutch clearance





1. Measure the clearance between the retaining plate and the snap ring.

Clearance: 1.3-1.5 mm {0.051-0.059 inch}

2. If not as specified, replace parts as necessary.

Low And Reverse Brake Preinspection
Clutch operation

Caution:
Applying compressed air to the assembled clutch pack for longer than 3 seconds at a time will damage the seal. Do not apply compressed air for more that the aforementioned time when testing the system.





1. Inspect the clutch operation by applying compressed air as shown.

Air pressure 390 kPa {4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi} max.

2. If not as specified, replace parts as necessary.

Clutch clearance





1. Measure the clearance between the retaining plate and the snap ring.

Clearance 1.5-1.8 mm {0.059-0.070 inch}

2. If not as specified, replace parts as necessary.

Differential Preinspection
Backlash





1. Measure the backlash of the side gear.

Backlash:
Standard: 0.05-0.15 mm {0.0020-0.0059 inch}
Maximum: 0.5 mm {0.020 inch)


2. If not as specified, replace differential.
