Lateral Links (Lower/Upper/Rear Lower)
LOWER LATERAL LINK, UPPER LATERAL LINK, REAR LOWER LATERAL LINK REMOVAL/INSTALLATIONCaution:
^ Performing the following procedures without first removing the ABS wheel-speed sensor may possibly cause an open circuit In the harness If It Is pulled by mistake. Before performing the following procedures, remove the ABS wheel-speed sensor (axle side) and fix it to an appropriate place where the sensor will not be pulled by mistake while servicing the vehicle.
1. Remove in the order indicated in the table.
2. Install in the reverse order of removal.
3. Adjust the rear wheel alignment.
Lower Lateral Link Ball Joint Removal Note
1. Remove the ball joint using the SSTs.
Upper Lateral Link Ball Joint Removal Note
1. Install the SSTs to the ball joint.
2. Tighten the bolt of the SSTs to 34 - 35 Nm (3.4 - 3.6 kgf-m, 25 - 26 ft. lbs.)
3. Tap the knuckle as shown.
Caution:
^ Do not tap the ball joint and the stud bolt.
^ Be careful not to make an edge on the knuckle.
Nut, Cam Plate, and Adjusting Cam Bolt Removal Note
1. Before loosening the nut, make a mark on the cam plate and the crossmember for reference during installation.
Dust Boot (Lower Lateral Link) Removal Note
1. Remove the dust boot using a chisel, being careful not to damage the ball joint and the arm.
Lower Lateral Link Bushing Removal Note
1. Cut away the projecting rubber part of the lower lateral link bushing.
2. Remove the bushing using the SSTs.
Damper Bushing Removal Note
1. Cut away the projecting rubber part of the lower lateral link bushing.
2. Remove the bushing using the SSTs.
Dust Boot (Upper Lateral Link) Removal Note
1. Remove the dust boot (upper lateral link) in the same way as the dust boot (Lower Lateral Link).
Rear Lower Lateral Link Outer Ball Joint Removal Note
1. Remove the rear lower lateral link outer ball joint in the same way as the upper lateral link ball joint.
Dust Boot (Rear Lower Lateral Link) Removal Note
1. Remove the dust boot (rear lower lateral link) in the same way as the dust boot (lower lateral like).
Dust Boot (Lower Lateral Link) Installation Note
1. Wipe the grease off the ball stud.
2. Fill the inside of the new dust boot with grease.
3. Press the boot onto the ball joint using the SST.
4. Wipe away the excess grease.
Dust Boot (Upper Lateral Link) Installation Note
1. Wipe the grease off the ball stud.
2. Fill the inside of the new dust boot with grease.
3. Press the boot onto the ball joint using the SST.
4. Wipe away the excess grease.
Dust Boot (Rear Lower Lateral Link) Installation Note
1. Install the dust boot (rear lower lateral link) in the same way as the dust boot (upper lateral link).
Lower Lateral Link Bushing Installation Note
1. Apply soapy water to the new bushing.
2. Insert the new bushing to the lower lateral link (chamfered side).
3. Draw a line 6 mm (0.24 inch) from the bottom of the SST.
4. Position the SSTs on the lower lateral link as shown.
5. Press in the SSTs and bushing down to the line drawn on the SST.
6. Turn the lower lateral link to the opposite side, and position the SSTs as shown.
7. Using the SSTs, press in the bushing until the pressure gauge starts to increase sharply.
Damper Bushing Installation Note
1. Apply soapy water to the new bushing.
2. Insert the new bushing to the lower lateral link (chamfered side).
3. Position the SSTs on the lower lateral link as shown.
4. Using the SSTs, press in the bushing until the pressure gauge starts to increase sharply.
5. Turn the lower lateral link and SST (49 T028 203) to the opposite side, and position the SST as shown.
6. Using the SSTs, press in the bushing until the pressure gauge starts to increase sharply.
Nut, Cam Plate, and Adjusting Cam Bolt Installation Note
1. Install the cam plate so that the notch faces the same direction as the adjusting cam bolt.
2. Align the marks that were made before removing the adjusting cam bolt, and tighten the nut.
Tightening torque 79 - 116 Nm (8.0 - 11.9 kgf-m, 58 - 86 ft. lbs.)
LOWER LATERAL LINK, UPPER LATERAL LINK, REAR LOWER LATERAL LINK INSPECTION
1. Inspect the link for damage and boot cracks. Replace it as necessary.
2. Inspect the ball joint for looseness. Replace the link as necessary.
3. Inspect the ball joint rotation torque as follows.
1. Shake the ball joint stud at least 5 times.
2. Connect the SST to the stud and measure the rotation torque using a pull scale. If not within the specification, replace the link of the ball joint.
Lower lateral link ball joint
Rotation torque 0.3 - 3.4 Nm (3 - 35 kgf-cm, 2.7 - 30 inch lbs.)
Pull scale reading 3.0 - 34 N (0.3 - 3.5 kgf, 0.7 - 7.7 lbs.)
Upper lateral link ball joint, rear lower lateral link ball joint
Rotation torque 0.3 - 3.9 Nm (3 - 40 kgf-cm, 2.7 - 34 inch lbs.)
Pull scale reading 3.0 - 39 N (0.3 - 4.0 kgf, 0.7 - 8.8 lbs.)
4. Inspect the rear lower lateral link swinging torque as follows.
1. Swing the link five times.
2. Measure the swinging torque using a pull scale.
^ Replace if it is not within the specification.
Swinging torque 0.1 - 3.4 Nm (11 - 35 kgf-cm, 0.9 - 30 inch lbs.)
