PLANETARY GEARSETS AND CHAIN DRIVE PARTS
Disassembly Note





1. Inspect this low/intermediate sun gear assembly for damage.
1. Gear teeth
2. Thrust bearing surfaces
3. Journal surface





2. Inspect the low/intermediate carrier assembly.
1. Pinion gear teeth
2. Spline teeth
3. Pinion gear surfaces
4. Bushing surfaces
5. Pinion gear bearings





3. Inspect the low/intermediate carrier assembly end play.
1. Use a feeler gauge to measure end play.
1. If end play is out of specification, install a new assembly.





4. Inspect the low/intermediate ring gear.
1. Gear teeth
2. Spline teeth
3. Thrust bearing surfaces
4. Journal surface





5. Lug teeth
5. Inspect the reverse/overdrive sun gear and shell assembly for damage or wear.
1. Gear teeth
2. Lug teeth
3. Thrust bearing surfaces
4. Bushing surface





6. Inspect the reverse/overdrive carrier assembly
1. Pinion gear teeth
2. Clutch plate spline teeth
3. Pinion gear bearings
4. Thrust bearing surfaces
5. Bushing surfaces
6. No.8 thrust bearing captured between the pinions and carrier





7. Inspect the reverse/overdrive carrier assembly end play.
1. Use feeler gauge to measure end play.
1. If end play is out of specification, install a new assembly.





8. Inspect the reverse/overdrive ring gear.
1. Gear teeth
2. Spline teeth
3. Drive sprocket teeth
4. Thrust bearing surfaces
5. Journal surface
6. Bearings





9. Inspect the driven sprocket assembly.
1. Gear teeth
2. Parking gear lug teeth
3. Driven sprocket teeth
4. Thrust bearing surfaces
5. Bearing surfaces
6. Rivets
7. Bushing surfaces
8. Lubrication holes





10. Inspect the drive chain.
1. Check the drive chain for wear, stretching, or tightness of the chain links.
2. The chain must move freely.
