Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
Inspection and Verification1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
Visual Inspection Chart:
2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Refer to the chart:
3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
4. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the WDS or equivalent Tester to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the WDS or equivalent Tester menu. If WDS or equivalent Tester does not communicate with the vehicle:
1. check that the program card is correctly installed.
2. check the connections to the vehicle.
3. check the ignition switch position.
5. If the WDS or equivalent Tester still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the WDS or equivalent Tester.
6. Carry out the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS test. If the WDS or equivalent Tester responds with:
1. CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, refer to COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK.
2. NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for GEM, go to PINPOINT TEST 1: NO COMMUNICATION WITH THE GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM).
3. SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out self-test diagnostics for the GEM.
7. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the GEM Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics. Diagnostic Trouble Code Descriptions
8. If DTCs are retrieved that are not found in the following GEM Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index, refer to the master GEM Diagnostics Trouble Code (DTC) index in MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULE.
9. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, proceed to the TROUBLESHOOTING INDEX to continue diagnostics.
