AIR BAG DISPOSAL - DRIVER, UNDEPLOYED

Remote Deployment

WARNING: Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module or safety belt retractor/pretensioner assembly. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.

WARNING: Carry a live air bag module with the air bag and trim cover or deployment door pointed away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.

WARNING: Remote deployment is to be performed outdoors with all personnel at least 6.1 meters (20 feet) away to ensure personal safety. Due to the loud report which occurs when the air bag is deployed, hearing protection is required.

WARNING: Do not place the driver or passenger air bag module with the trim cover or deployment door facing down, as the forces of the deploying air bag can cause it to ricochet and cause personal injury.

1. Remove the driver air bag from the vehicle. For additional information, refer to DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE.

WARNING: If the steering wheel and air bag module assembly is not correctly installed to the tire and wheel assembly, serious injury may occur when the air bag module is deployed. When installing the steering wheel and air bag module assembly to the tire and wheel assembly, make sure the steering wheel and air bag module is facing up.

2. Position the steering wheel and driver air bag module assembly on the center of the wheel and tire assembly with the air bag module facing up.
3. Secure the steering wheel and driver air bag module to the wheel and tire assembly by wrapping the wiring harness through the wheel and around the bolt at least four times.
4. Connect the special tool adapter harness to the driver air bag module electrical connector.

5. Stack three tires and one wheel and tire assembly on top of the driver air bag module.

6. Secure all of the tires together with wire.

7. Connect the special tool to the special tool adapter harness.

8. Connect the special tool to the battery.
1. Connect the red clip to the positive battery terminal.
2. Connect the black clip to the negative battery terminal.

9. Verify that the red light on the special tool is illuminated.
10. Make sure all personnel are at least 6.1 meters (20 feet) away from the air bag module.

11. Using the special tool, deploy the air bag module by pressing the activation switch.
12. To allow for cooling, wait at least 15 minutes before approaching the deployed air bag.
13. Dispose of the deployed air bag module. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG DISPOSAL - DEPLOYED AIR BAG, in this section.
