2004-2005 B-SERIES TRUCKS - NO 3RD GEAR, P0733 SET AND FLASHING TCIL

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2004-2005 B-Series Trucks with automatic transmission produced between Aug 11, 2003 to Sept 22, 2004

DESCRIPTION

Some 2004-2005 B-Series Trucks produced before September 23, 2004, may exhibit symptoms of no 3rd gear along with a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0733 (3rd Gear Ratio Incorrect), and a flashing Transmission Control Indicator Lamp (TCIL). This may be due to improper pressure control. In addition, other shift concerns and transmission DTCs may be present.

It may be necessary to replace the Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) solenoid. Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE:
^ SSP 63 AT Additive XL-11 will prevent a drive issue on a good transmission but will not repair a customer drive complaint on a problem transmission. If there is a drive complaint, follow the service procedure listed in this bulletin.

^ Check vehicle warranty history for completion of SSP 63. It will not be necessary to add XL-11 AT Additive again if SSP 63 is complete, however adding a second bottle will not adversely affect transmission operation.

^ Contamination is not the cause of the condition addressed by this bulletin. It is not necessary to flush the transmission cooler/cooler lines or replace the fluid pan filter. Also, do not reprogram the PCM, do not replace the main control assembly and do not install an in-line service filter.

1. Verify customer concern.

2. Raise a support vehicle.

3. Remove pressure tap plug at the Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) solenoid port.

4. Install a pressure gauge into the EPC port to check EPC pressure, using a nipple and a 90 degree fitting.

NOTE:
When attempting to verify a shift is occurring into 3rd gear, be aware the B-Series features two shift strategies based on throttle position. At 1/3 throttle or less, the transmission shift sequence will be 1-3-4-5. When throttle position is greater than 1/3, the shift sequence will be 1-2-3-4-5.

5. Drive the vehicle at normal operating temperature while monitoring the EPC pressure during shifts. Attempt to perform five (5) upshifts into 3rd gear and five (5) downshifts from 3rd gear. If EPC pressure becomes erratic when the shifting concern is present replace the EPC solenoid. Refer to Workshop Manual section 05-13 TRANSMISSION SOLENOID REMOVAL / INSTALLATION.

6. Add 6 ounces (1 bottle) of Transmission Fluid Additive into the transmission.

WARNING:
Be sure to carefully read the safety label on AT Additive XL-11 bottle and follow all appropriate precautions. There have been reports that some technicians have experienced skin irritation after coming in contact with the transmission additive. Use gloves and safety goggles to avoid injury.

NOTE:
Shake additive well before use.

7. Adjust the transmission fluid to the proper level using clean Mercon(R) V.

8. Clear DTCs, verify that KAM has been cleared.

9. Verify repair.
