Timing Cover: Service and Repair
(1) Accessory drive belt tensioner bolt.
(2) Accessory drive belt tensioner.
(3) Accessory drive belt idler pulley bolt.
(4) Accessory drive belt idler pulley.
(5) Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
(6) Camshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
(7) Power steering pump bolt (3 req'd)
(8) Power steering pump.
(9) Engine front cover bolt (3 req'd)
(10) Engine front cover bolt (3 req'd)
NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
REMOVAL
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the oil pan.
4. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
5. Remove the generator.
6. Remove the RH and LH valve covers.
7. Remove the engine support insulator.
8. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner bolt and accessory drive belt tensioner.
9. Remove accessory drive belt idler pulley bolt and accessory drive belt idler pulley.
10. Disconnect the crankshaft (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
11. Disconnect the crankshaft (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
12. To gain access to the power steering pump bolts, remove the nut and the power steering pump pulley.
NOTE: The bolt positioned behind the power steering pump will remain in the pump housing.
13. Remove the power steering pump bolts and position the power steering pump aside.
(11) Engine front cover bolt (6 req'd).
(12) Engine front cover stud bolt (4 req'd).
(13) Engine front cover.
(14) Engine front cover gasket ( 3 pieces)
14. Remove the engine front cover bolts.
15. Remove the front engine cover stud bolts and the engine front cover.
16. Remove the engine cover gasket.
NOTE: To access the CKP sensor electrical connector, remove the nut and position the heated oxygen sensor electrical bracket aside.
INSTALLATION
CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of sealant.
- Clean all sealing surfaces with metal cleaner.
1. Install the gasket.
NOTE: The engine front cover must be installed and the bolts tightened within four minutes of applying sealant.
2. Apply a 6mm 0.23 in.) diameter dot of silicone gasket and sealer to the cylinder block, lower cylinder block and cylinder head mating surfaces.
NOTE: Fasteners 1,8,13 and 16 are stud bolts.
3. Position the engine front cover, install the engine front cover, bolts and tighten the bolts in the sequence shown.
4. Install the oil pan.
4. Position the CKP sensor, install the heated oxygen sensor electrical connector bracket and nut and connect the electrical connector.
5. Install the engine front cover bolts
6. Position back the power steering pump and install the power steering pump bolts.
7. Install the power steering pump pulley.
8. Install the generator.
9. Install the crankshaft pulley.
10 Connect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
11. Install the accessory drive belt idler pulley and the accessory drive belt idler pulley bolt.
12. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner and the accessory drive belt tensioner bolt.
13. Install the engine support insulator.
14. Install the LH and RH valve covers.
15. Connect the negative battery cable.
