Mirrors: Description and Operation
REAR VIEW MIRRORSPrinciples of Operation
The rear view mirror system consists of the following components:
- exterior rear view mirror (heated optional)
- exterior mirror control switch
- auto-dimming rear view mirror (optional)
- interior rear view mirror
Exterior Rear View Mirror
The exterior rear view mirrors allow the driver or passenger mirror to be electronically or manually adjusted. The position of the mirrors is controlled by the exterior mirror control switch. Adjusting the exterior mirror control switch to the LH or RH position determines which exterior rear view mirror will be controlled. The exterior rear view mirrors are available with a heated option. The exterior rear view mirrors are heated to remove frost, snow, ice and condensation. The heated exterior rear view mirrors are heated for a period of 15 minutes through the rear window defrost switch.
Interior Rear View Mirror
The interior rear view mirror may be equipped with an auto-dimming option. This feature automatically reduces the glare caused by headlamps reflecting in the mirror. The auto-dimming feature is disabled when the vehicle is in reverse, allowing a bright view for backing up. There is also a feature to inform the driver the autolamp feature is ON, and can be disabled by pressing the mirror mounted switch to the OFF position. Power is supplied to the auto-dimming rear view mirror when the ignition is in the ON or ACC position.
Heated Exterior Rear View Mirror
The heated exterior rear view mirror feature will only function when the rear window defrost is operating. There is no separate control for heated exterior rear view mirrors; they function anytime the rear window defrost is ON. The heated exterior rear view mirror power is supplied by the rear window defrost relay through a separate smart junction box (SJB) fuse 10 (15 A) that isolates the heated mirrors from the rear window defrost in the event of a concern. The heated exterior rear view mirrors are heated for a period of 15 minutes when the rear window defrost switch is activated.
