TSB: 01-023/07

2006-2007 MAZDA5 - IDLE FLUCTUATION/ENGINE VIBRATION

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2006-2007 Mazda5 vehicles with VINs lower than JM1 CR**** ** 133752 (produced before August 4, 2006)

DESCRIPTION

Some vehicles may experience idle fluctuation or engine vibration after the engine starts from a misfire caused by water settling around the No. 1 plug after it rains or a car wash. The water enters the engine compartment because of poor sealing between the cowl grill and the hood. To prevent water from entering the engine compartment and settling around the No. 1 plug, a pad will be added on the cowl grill and the shape of the rubber seal for the ignition coil will be modified.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify customer concern.

2. Replace the No. 1 ignition coil with a modified one.

3. Remove the left and right front wiper arms and blades. Refer to appropriate Workshop Manual section 09-19 - WINDSHIELD WIPER ARM AND BLADE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.

4. Remove the front fender molding.

5. Remove the weatherstrip.

6. Remove the fasteners.

7. Remove both left and right cowl grills by pulling up on the front and then pulling forward.

8. Add pads to the surface and back of the cowl grill.

NOTE:
Before adding the pads, be sure to clean and degrease the areas where the pads are attached.

9. Reinstall the parts in the reverse order of removal.

10. Verify repair.

a. Close the hood and pour water over the windshield to make sure that water does not drip into the upper area of the engine compartment.

b. Start the engine and make sure that there is no idle fluctuation and/or engine vibration.
