DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR PROCEDURE FOR ATF SEEPAGE

APPLICABLE MODEL(S) / VINS
2004-2009 MAZDA3 2.0L with FN4A-EL ATX
2006-2007 MAZDA5 2.3L with FN4A-EL ATX
2003-2005 MAZDA6 2.3L with FN4A-EL ATX

DESCRIPTION

Some vehicles may exhibit ATF seepage from the ATX. Refer to the following diagnosis and repair procedure to properly identify the cause and repair the vehicle.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE:
To prevent misdiagnosis, remove all grease and dirt from the seep location and verify the location of the seeping after driving the vehicle.

Possible Causes:





^ ATF leaking from oil seal (A):

- Oil seal lip burning.

- Oil seal lip wear due to adhering foreign matter.

- Oil seal damage and wear in contact area (to shaft) due to shaft runout.

^ ATF leaking from transaxle case surface (B):

- Pin holes in the transaxle case (at time of manufacture).

^ ATF leaking from silicone sealant (C):

- Sealant peeling and burning.

^ ATF leaking from 0-ring (D):

- 0-ring burning.

- Looseness in part installation.

- Incorrect installation (0-ring is not seated to installation surface correctly).

^ ATF leaking from washer (E):

- Looseness in part installation

- Incorrect installation (washer is not seated to installation surface correctly).

^ ATF malfunction (leaking from oil filler tube) (F):

- Incorrect installation (washer is not seated to installation surface correctly).

- Water penetration into ATF.

- ATF deterioration (anti-foaming performance decreases and liquid level increases).

^ ATF malfunction (leaking from torque converter) (G):
