Drivetrain - Clunk When Shifting From 'P' to 'R'

TSB: 03-004/06

2007 MAZDA CX-7 AWD
CLUNKING NOISE WHEN SHIFTING FROM P TO R

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2007 CX-7 AWD vehicles with VINS lower than JM3ER29L970117176 (produced before June 20, 2006)

DESCRIPTION

Some AWD vehicles may exhibit a high frequency clunking noise (metal noise) from the front propeller shaft when shifting from P to R range. The slight noise of the disengagement of the parking gear is amplified by resonance of the powertrain unit and propeller shaft causing a loud metal noise. A noise insulation damper has been added to the front propeller shaft to reduce the noise.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify customer concern using the following method.

2. On a flat surface, start the engine cold.

3. With the parking brake applied and brake pedal depressed, repeat shifting from P to R range.

NOTE:
^ Do not shift into N or D range during repeat shifting.

^ When the idle speed is high, the clunking noise may not occur. The noise normally occurs after repeating P to R range shifting several times when the idle speed is approximately 1,000 rpm.

4. Replace the propeller shaft with a modified part according to the Workshop Manual (section 03-15 PROPELLER SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).

5. Verify repair.
