PINPOINT TEST 12: DTCs C1187, C1188, C1189, C1327 AND C1523 - BRAKE FLUID LEVEL SENSOR FAULT - HYBRID

Normal Operation

The brake fluid level sensor is normally open, when the brake fluid is below a predetermined level, the switch closes and completes a circuit. The ABS control module continuously monitors the brake fluid level. When the module senses a low fluid level condition, it sends a message to the instrument cluster to illuminate the red brake warning indicator and sets DTC C1327.
The ABS control module provides a reference voltage to the brake fluid level switch along circuit (G), the voltage goes through the switch and back into the ABS control module along circuit (L/BR).

- DTC C1187 (Brake Fluid Level Sensor Input Open Circuit) - If the ABS control module detects an open in circuit (L/BR), it will set DTC C1187.
- DTC C1188 (Brake Fluid Level Sensor Input Short Circuit to Battery) - If the ABS control module detects a short to battery voltage in circuit (L/BR), DTC C1188 will be set.
- DTC C1189 (Brake Fluid Level Sensor Input Short Circuit to Ground) - If the ABS control module detects a short to ground in circuit (L/BR), it will set DTC C1189.
- DTC C1327 (Brake Fluid Level Low) - When the brake fluid is below a predetermined level, the ABS control module will set DTC C1327. If there is an internal failure of the brake fluid level switch that causes the ABS control module to detect low brake fluid, this DTC will also be set.
- DTC C1523 (Brake Fluid Level Sensor Out of Range) - If the signal from the brake fluid level switch is above or below a predetermined range due to a short to voltage or ground, an open circuit or an internal failure in the switch, DTC C1523 will be set.

Possible Causes
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Brake fluid level switch
- ABS control module

Diagnostic Procedure

CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connectors

NOTE: The brake fluid level switch is integral to the master cylinder reservoir. The brake fluid level switch is not available separately and must be installed as an assembly.
