Starting System: Description and Operation

STARTING SYSTEM

STARTING SYSTEM OUTLINE
The starting system includes:
- Powertrain Control Module
- Transaxle Control Module
- Transmission Range Sensor
- Traction Battery Control Module
- DC/DC Converter Module
- 330V High Voltage Battery
- Motor/Generator
- Planetary Gear Set

Highlights of the Hybrid starting system include:
- There is no traditional starter motor.
- The hybrid engine will not start in NEUTRAL, only in PARK.
- The engine starts and shuts off automatically as needed.
- On cold start, the engine will stay running until coolant reaches normal operating temperature.
- The generator motor is used to start the gasoline engine.
- The eCVT incorporates the functions of both the starter and the belt-driven generator.

STARTING SYSTEM OPERATION
When the ignition key is turned to the START position, the electric motor turns on. The electric motor, in turn, starts the gasoline engine. Utilizing the HS CAN, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Transaxle Control Module perform a series of checks to determine if the vehicle can switch to electric-only operation. These checks include:
- Battery charge
- Operating temperatures
- Climate control settings (Max A/C requires the gasline engine to run)

If the proper criteria are met, the engine will shut off, leaving the vehicle running in electric-only mode. This process takes under 2 seconds.
