Intermediate Servo Removal / Installation

INTERMEDIATE SERVO REMOVAL / INSTALLATION

Removal Note

1. Remove the control valve body. See Control Valve Body Removal / Installation.

2. Remove the shift cable.
a. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever.

b. Remove the shift cable from the bracket.






3. Remove the digital transmission range (TR) sensor. See Service and Repair.

NOTE:If equipped, the transmission servo heat shield needs to be unclipped from the fluid pan rail and positioned out of the way for fluid pan removal.Loosen the nut and position the heat shield out of the way.






5. Remove the intermediate band locknut and unscrew the intermediate band adjusting screw.

- Discard the intermediate band locknut after removal.






6. Remove the catalytic converter. See - Service and Repair for 2.3L engine, or see - Service and Repair for 4.0L engine.

CAUTION:Servo cover is under spring tension. Use caution when removing.

7. Using the servo cover compressor SST, remove the intermediate band servo cover retaining ring.
a. Install the servo cover compressor SST and compress the intermediate band servo cover.

b. Remove the intermediate servo cover retaining ring.

- Slowly remove tension on the J hook nut and remove the servo cover compressor.






8. Using servo cover compressor SST, remove the overdrive band servo cover retaining ring.
a. Install the servo cover compressor SST and compress the overdrive/front band servo cover.

b. Remove the overdrive/front servo cover retaining ring.

- Slowly remove tension on the J-hook nut and remove the servo cover compressor.

CAUTION:The servo removal tool SST should be used to prevent damage to the servo and bore.Use the servo removal tool SST to remove the front band servo cover, servo piston and servo piston spring.
a. Insert the servo removal tool SST into the transmission case, locate on the servo rod, and remove the front band servo cover, servo piston and servo piston spring.






Installation Note

1. Assemble the intermediate band servo cover, intermediate band servo piston, and the servo piston spring.
a. Install the intermediate band servo piston into the intermediate band servo cover.

b. Install the servo piston spring on the intermediate band servo piston.






CAUTION:Do not damage O-ring during installation. Do not press servo cover and O-ring past relief hole in case, or O-ring damage may occur.

2. Install the intermediate band servo piston assembly into the transmission case.

- Lubricate intermediate band servo cover O-ring with petroleum jelly.






3. Using the servo cover compressor SST, install the intermediate band servo cover retaining ring.
a. Install the servo cover compressor SST and compress the intermediate band servo cover.

b. Install the intermediate servo cover retaining ring.






c. Remove the servo cover compressor SST.

4. Install the catalytic converter. See - Service and Repair for 2.3L engine, or - Service and Repair for 4.0L engine.

5. Install the digital transmission range (TR) sensor. See Service and Repair.

6. Position the transmission modulator heat shield on the transmission and install the nut (5R44E/5R55E only).






7. Install the shift cable.
a. Install the shift cable.

b. Install the shift cable to the manual control lever.






8. Install the control valve body. See Control Valve Body Removal / Installation.

9. Adjust the intermediate band. See Adjustments.

10. Lower the vehicle.

NOTE:When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms can occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The customer needs to be notified that they may experience slightly different upshifts either soft or firm and this is a temporary condition and will eventually return to normal operating condition.Connect the negative battery cable.
