Shift Solenoid: Service and Repair




TRANSMISSION SOLENOID REMOVAL / INSTALLATION

Removal

1. Remove the oil pan and oil strainer. See Service and Repair.

NOTE:Main control assembly does not need to be removed for solenoid service.Remove wire loom guide and protector.

- Carefully lift up on wire loom guide and protector and disengage the retaining pins from the solenoid clamps.






3. Disconnect the 6 solenoid electrical connectors.
a. Disconnect the (1) SSA, SSB, SSC and SSD electrical connectors.

b. Disconnect the (2) torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid electrical connector.

c. Disconnect the (3) electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid electrical connector.

CAUTION:The TCC solenoid and converter modulator valve may pop out of its bore. This may damage the solenoid or converter modulator valve.SSC may pop out of its bore. This may damage the solenoid.Remove the solenoids.
a. Remove the wire harness.

b. Remove the solenoid clamp bolts.

c. Remove the solenoid clamp.

d. Remove the appropriate solenoid(s).






Installation Note

1. Install the new solenoid(s).

CAUTION:The solenoid clamp must be installed in the TCC and EPC solenoid grooves, shift solenoid pockets and the No. 204 plug.Install the solenoid clamp.
a. Position the solenoid clamp on the main control valve body.

b. Install the solenoid clamp bolts.






3. Connect the 6 solenoid electrical connectors.
a. Connect the (1) SSA, SSB, SSC and SSD electrical connectors.

b. Connect the (2) torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid electrical connector.

c. Connect the (3) electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid electrical connector.

CAUTION:Excessive pressure may break the locating pins.Install the main control valve body wire loom.

- Align the retaining pins to the holes in the solenoid clamps and press in the main control valve body wire harness guide and protector.






5. Install the oil pan and oil strainer. See Service and Repair.

NOTE:When filling a dry transmission and converter start with a minimum of 3.7 liters (4 quarts) of clean transmission fluid.Fill transmission with clean automatic transmission fluid to the correct fluid level.

7. Apply the parking brake and start the engine

8. Move the transmission range gear selector lever through all the gears.

9. Check the transmission fluid level.
