Bulletin No: 09-015/09

Last Issued: 03/18/2009

Subject:
2007-2009 CX-9 - RUST APPEARS AROUND LIFTGATE REAR FINISHER CORNERS

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2007-2009 CX-9 with VINs lower than JM3 TB**** ** 171260
(built before December 1, 2008)

DESCRIPTION

Some CX-9 vehicles may show signs of rust on the liftgate near the corners of the liftgate rear finisher. The cause is that the clearance between the rear finisher and the liftgate body panel is too small. In extremely cold temperatures, both sides of the rear finisher become deformed and rub on the liftgate body panel. As a result, damage to the paint occurs and rust may start.

As a mass-production change, the shape of the rear finisher has been changed to ensure more clearance between the rear finisher and the body panel.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify customer concern.

2. Remove the rear finisher. Refer to Workshop Manual section 09-16 REAR FINISHER REMOVAL / INSTALLATION.

3. Refinish the affected surface(s) on the liftgate.

4. Modify the existing rear finisher.

a. Using a suitable tool, peel off the protector (A) from the original rear finisher.

b. Peel off the protector (B) from the bottom part of the rear finisher.

c. Attach Protector (A) of the Repair Kit for Rear Finisher to the location where old protector (A) was removed.

NOTE:
^ Do not allow the lower end of the protector (A) to stick out past the edge of the rear finisher (C). Trim the protector as necessary.

d. Attach Protector (B) of the Repair Kit for Rear Finisher to where old protector (B) was removed.

e. Replace the 2 existing bolts and washers on each outer end of the rear finisher with the 2 bolts and washers from the Repair Kit. Reuse 2 existing bolts and washers in the center.

5. Install the rear finisher. Refer to Workshop Manual section 09-16 REAR FINISHER REMOVAL / INSTALLATION.

6. Verify repair.
