Camshaft Position Sensor: Testing and Inspection

CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR INSPECTION [MZI-3.7]

NOTE:
- Before performing the following inspection, make sure to follow the procedure as indicated in the troubleshooting flowchart. Description and Operation

Visual Inspection

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Removal and Replacement

2. Remove the battery. Removal and Replacement

3. Remove the resonance chamber and air cleaner assy for easier access. Service and Repair

4. Disconnect the CMP sensor connector.

5. Remove the CMP sensor. Service and Repair

6. Verify that there are no metal shavings on the CMP sensor.

- If there is a malfunction, remove any metal shavings that are adhering.

Resistance Inspection

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Removal and Replacement

2. Disconnect the CMP sensor connector.

3. Measure the resistance between CMP sensor terminals A and B.

- If not within the specification, replace the CMP sensor. Service and Repair
- If the monitor item status/specification (reference) is not within the specification, even though the resistance is within the specification, perform the "Circuit Open/Short Inspection".

CMP sensor resistance
- 1,146-1,400 ohms

Circuit Open/Short Inspection

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Removal and Replacement

2. Disconnect the CMP sensor connector.

3. Disconnect the PCM connector.

4. Inspect the following wiring harness for open or short circuit. (Continuity inspection)

Open circuit

- If there is no continuity, there is an open circuit. Repair or replace the wiring harness.

- CMP sensor (LH) terminal A and PCM terminal 2T
- CMP sensor (LH) terminal B and PCM terminal 2Y
- CMP sensor (RH) terminal A and PCM terminal 2X
- CMP sensor (RH) terminal B and PCM terminal 2AB

Short circuit

- If there is continuity, there is a short circuit. Repair or replace the wiring harness.

- CMP sensor (LH)/(RH) terminal A and power supply
- CMP sensor (LH)/(RH) terminal A and body ground
- CMP sensor (LH)/(RH) terminal B and power supply
