2. Procedure for transporting an undeployed seat belt with pretensioner

Service personnel should check the latest service bulletins for the appropriate seat belt with pretensioner transporting procedure.

Warning

  • When transporting an unactivated seat belt with pretensioner, make sure to face the gas generator section away from your body.
  • This is to minimize the risk of injury in the event that a seat belt with pretensioner accidentally activates.
  • Never attempt to touch or move the wiring or connectors of the seat belt with pretensioner.

2. Seat belt with pretensioner (scrapping procedure) safety information

Caution

  • During the course of a vehicle's service life, certain situations may arise which will necessitate the disposal of an unactivated seat belt with pretensioner.
  • This information covers the proper procedures for disposing of an unactivated seat belt with pretensioner.
  • An unactivated seat belt with pretensioner must not be disposed of through normal refuse channels.
  • Before a seat belt with pretensioner can be disposed of, it must be activated.
  • Failure to follow the proper disposal procedure can result in injury due to activation of the seat belt with pretensioner.
  • The seat belt with pretensioner may be activated either inside or outside the vehicle.
  • Failure to dispose of in accordance with the proper disposal procedure may be a violation of federal, state, or local laws.

3. Deployed seat belt with pretensioner safety information

Caution

  • Be sure to wear gloves and safety glasses when handling a seat belt with pretensioner after activation.
  • Safety precautions must be observed when handling a seat belt with pretensioner.
  • The activated seat belt with pretensioner may contain a small amount of sodium hydroxide.
  • This is a byproduct of the deployment reaction, and may cause irritation if it comes in contact with the skin or eyes.
  • Wash hands with soap after handling.

4. Seat belt with pretensioner (deployment procedure for disposal) safety information

Caution

  • Failure to follow correct procedures may lead to a serious accident due to malfunction of the seat belt with pretensioner during work.
  • Never disassemble the seat belt with pretensioner as it is designed to deploy using backup power in the event of a collision, even when the battery power is cut off.
  • Do not subject the seat belt with pretensioner to impact or place it near a magnet.
  • This may cause the pretensioner to malfunction.
  • Place the seat belt with pretensioner so that the gas generator section faces outward.
  • Do not place any items on the seat belt with pretensioner.
  • In order to prevent malfunctions caused by static electricity, touch a metal part of the vehicle before beginning the procedure.
  • Perform the procedure in a well-ventilated area.
  • When deploying indoors, do not deploy near a fire alarm, smoke detector, or under a fluorescent light.
  • Take care not to inhale the smoke emitted on deployment.
  • Do not allow water or other fluids to come in contact with the seat belt with pretensioner.
  • Do not reuse a removed seat belt with pretensioner in another vehicle.

5. Undeployed seat belt with pretensioner (deployment outside vehicle) scrapping

1. Outside vehicle operation precautions

Caution

  • When activating an unactivated seat belt with pretensioner outside the vehicle, the activation procedure must be strictly followed.
  • Continue to wear safety glasses until the activated seat belt with pretensioner is disposed of.
  • Before performing the disposal procedure, you should be fully familiar with SRS repairs and with proper handling of the seat belt with pretensioner.
  • Go over the procedure carefully before beginning work.
  • Use SRS deployment harnesses 5-8840-3165-0 and 5-8840-3190-0, as well as SRS deployment fixture 5-8840-2420-0 for this procedure.

Note

  • SRS deployment harnesses 5-8840-2468-1 and 5-8840-2881-1 can also be used.
  • When using SRS deployment harnesses 5-8840-2468-1 and 5-8840-3190-0, replacement harness 5-8840-3167-0 is required.

Caution

  • The procedure must not be performed if the SRS deployment harness and SRS deployment fixture are not available.

Warning

  • Failure to follow the proper disposal procedure can result in injury.
  • Never connect the SRS deployment harness to any power source before connecting it to the seat belt with pretensioner.
  • Keep the deployment harness shorted until the moment when the seat belt with pretensioner is to be activated.
  • The seat belt with pretensioner will immediately activate when a power supply is connected to it.

2. Seat belt with pretensioner activation procedure

1) Wear safety glasses.

2) Remove the seat belt with pretensioner from the vehicle.

Refer to "8.Restraints 8C.Seat Belt Systems rear tongue side seat belt (with pretensioner) removal".

Warning

  • When transporting an unactivated seat belt with pretensioner, make sure to face the gas generator section away from your body.

3) Inspect the SRS deployment harness for damage.

Note

  • If the harness is damaged, discard it and obtain a new one.

4) Short the 2 SRS deployment harnesses together by securely inserting one banana plug into the other.

Caution

  • The SRS deployment harness should remain shorted, and absolutely must not be connected to a power supply until the moment when the seat belt with pretensioner is to be activated.

Warning

  • Connecting the deployment harness to the power source should always be the last step in the seat belt with pretensioner activation procedure.
  • If this procedure is not followed correctly, there is a risk of injury.

5) Connect the SRS deployment harness.

6) Clear a space on the ground about 2 m (6.6 feet) in diameter where the seat belt with pretensioner is to be activated.

Note

  • An outdoor location on a paved road where people do not pass is preferred.
  • If an outdoor location is not available, select a space on the shop floor where people do not pass and where there is sufficient ventilation.

7) Ensure that no loose or flammable objects are within the deployment area.

8) Install the SRS deployment fixture to a bench vise.

9) Install the SRS deployment fixture to the seat belt with pretensioner.

10) Connect the SRS deployment harness to the seat belt with pretensioner.

Note

  • Ensure that the SRS deployment harness is securely installed to the connector of the seat belt with pretensioner.

Caution

  • Keep the deployment harness shorted until the moment when the seat belt with pretensioner is to be activated.

Warning

  • The seat belt with pretensioner will immediately activate when a power supply is connected to it.

11) Stretch the SRS deployment harness from the seat belt with pretensioner to its maximum length.

12) Place a power source near the shorted end of the SRS deployment harness.

Note

  • A vehicle battery of minimum 12 V and minimum 2 A is recommended as the power supply.

13) Verify that the area around the seat belt with pretensioner is clear of all people and loose or flammable objects.

14) Notify all persons in the nearby area that a seat belt with pretensioner will be deployed.

Caution

  • The activation will be accompanied by an extremely loud noise which may startle persons who are not expecting it.

15) Separate the 2 banana plugs on the SRS deployment harness.

16) Again notify all persons in the nearby area that a seat belt with pretensioner will be deployed.

17) Connect SRS deployment harness to the power supply to activate the seat belt with pretensioner.

Warning

  • The seat belt with pretensioner will immediately activate when a power supply is connected to it.

18) Disconnect the SRS deployment harness from the power supply.

19) Short the 2 SRS deployment harnesses together by securely inserting one banana plug into the other.

20) If the seat belt with pretensioner does not activate after following this procedure, immediately go to 3. Procedure for when the seat belt with pretensioner did not activate.

Caution

  • When handling the activated seat belt with pretensioner, wear a pair of work gloves and safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes from possible irritation and heat.

Warning

  • Safety precautions must be observed when handling an activated seat belt with pretensioner.
  • After activation, the metal parts of the seat belt with pretensioner will be very hot.
  • Do not touch the metal portions of the seat belt with pretensioner for about 30 minutes after activation.
  • Wait for the gas generator to cool.
  • Do not place an activated seat belt with pretensioner near any flammable objects.
  • If this procedure is not followed correctly, there is a risk of injury.
  • If the activated seat belt with pretensioner must be moved before it has cooled, be sure to wear gloves and avoid touching any metal surfaces.

21) Disconnect the SRS deployment harness from the seat belt with pretensioner.

Caution

  • After activation, disconnect the SRS deployment harness from the seat belt with pretensioner as quickly as possible to avoid damaging the SRS deployment harness.

22) Inspect the SRS deployment harness for damage, and replace if necessary.

23) Dispose of the activated seat belt with pretensioner through normal refuse channels.

3. When the seat belt with pretensioner does not activate

1) Disconnect the SRS deployment harness from the seat belt with pretensioner.

Warning

  • When transporting an unactivated seat belt with pretensioner, make sure to face the gas generator section away from your body.

2) Inspect the SRS deployment harness.

3) Inspect the SRS deployment harness, and if a malfunction is found, replace it. Then, go back and follow 2. Seat belt with pretensioner activation procedure, and activate the seatbelt with pretensioner.

4) When no malfunction can be found in the SRS deployment harness, inspect the battery power supply. If there are no problems, go back and follow 2. Seat belt with pretensioner activation procedure, and activate the seatbelt with pretensioner.

6. Undeployed seat belt with pretensioner (deployment inside vehicle) scrapping

Operating inside the vehicle is effective when the vehicle is being scrapped or when recovering parts that can be reused.
This includes, but is not limited to, the following situations.

The vehicle has completed its useful life.
2
The seat belt with pretensioner was not activated during an accident in which the vehicle suffered unrepairable damage.
3
Vehicles stripped or damaged beyond repair by theft.
4
Collection of reusable components.

1. In vehicle operation precautions

Warning

  • Never use SRS components from one vehicle in another vehicle.

Caution

  • When activating an unactivated seat belt with pretensioner inside the vehicle, the activation procedure must be strictly followed.
  • Continue to wear safety glasses until the activated seat belt with pretensioner is disposed of.
  • Before performing the disposal procedure, you should be fully familiar with SRS repairs and with proper handling of the seat belt with pretensioner.
  • Go over the procedure carefully before beginning work.
  • Use SRS deployment harnesses 5-8840-3165-0 and 5-8840-3190-0 for this procedure.

Note

  • SRS deployment harnesses 5-8840-2468-1 and 5-8840-2881-1 can also be used.
  • When using SRS deployment harnesses 5-8840-2468-1 and 5-8840-3190-0, replacement harness 5-8840-3167-0 is required.

Caution

  • The procedure must not be performed when the SRS deployment harness is not available.

Warning

  • Failure to follow the proper disposal procedure can result in injury.
  • Never connect the SRS deployment harness to any power source before connecting it to the seat belt with pretensioner.
  • Keep the deployment harness shorted until the moment when the seat belt with pretensioner is to be activated.
  • The seat belt with pretensioner will immediately activate when a power supply is connected to it.

2. Seat belt with pretensioner activation procedure

1) Remove all loose objects from the front seats.

2) To reduce the risk of personal injury from vehicle glass or pieces of the interior, cover the windshield area, and the front door window opening completely with a drop cloth, blanket, or similar item.

3) Wear safety glasses.

4) Inspect the SRS deployment harness for damage.

Note

  • If the harness is damaged, discard it and obtain a new one.

5) Short the 2 SRS deployment harnesses together by securely inserting one banana plug into the other.

Caution

  • The SRS deployment harness should remain shorted, and absolutely must not be connected to a power supply until the moment when the seat belt with pretensioner is to be activated.

Warning

  • Connecting the deployment harness to the power source should always be the last step in the seat belt with pretensioner activation procedure.
  • If this procedure is not followed correctly, there is a risk of injury.

6) Connect the SRS deployment harness.

7) Remove the center pillar lower trim cover from the center pillar.

Refer to "9.Body, Cab, Accessories 9L.Exterior, Interior Trim rear pillar trim cover (crew cab) removal".

8) Connect the SRS deployment harness to the seat belt with pretensioner.

Caution

  • Ensure that the SRS deployment harness is securely installed to the connector of the seat belt with pretensioner.
  • The SRS deployment harness should remain shorted, and absolutely must not be connected to a power supply until the moment when the seat belt with pretensioner is to be activated.
  • Verify that the inside of the vehicle and area around the vehicle are clear of all people and loose or flammable objects.

9) Stretch the SRS deployment harness from the seat belt with pretensioner to its maximum length.

10) Place a power source near the shorted end of the SRS deployment harness.

Note

  • A vehicle battery of minimum 12 V and minimum 2 A is recommended as the power supply.

11) Notify all persons in the nearby area that a seat belt with pretensioner will be deployed.

Caution

  • The activation will be accompanied by an extremely loud noise which may startle persons who are not expecting it.

12) Separate the 2 banana plugs on the SRS deployment harness.

13) Again notify all persons in the nearby area that a seat belt with pretensioner will be deployed.

14) Connect SRS deployment harness to the power supply to activate the seat belt with pretensioner.

Warning

  • The seat belt with pretensioner will immediately activate when a power supply is connected to it.

15) Disconnect the SRS deployment harness from the power supply.

16) Short the 2 SRS deployment harnesses together by securely inserting one banana plug into the other.

17) Remove the cover which was fitted to the windshield and the front door window.

18) If the seat belt with pretensioner does not activate after following this procedure, immediately go to 3. Procedure for when the seat belt with pretensioner did not activate.

Caution

  • When handling the activated seat belt with pretensioner, wear a pair of work gloves and safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes from possible irritation and heat.

Warning

  • Safety precautions must be observed when handling an activated seat belt with pretensioner.
  • After activation, the metal parts of the seat belt with pretensioner will be very hot.
  • Do not touch the metal portions of the seat belt with pretensioner for about 30 minutes after activation.
  • Wait for the gas generator to cool.
  • If this procedure is not followed correctly, there is a risk of injury.
  • If the activated seat belt with pretensioner must be moved before it has cooled, be sure to wear gloves and avoid touching any metal surfaces.

19) Disconnect the SRS deployment harness from the seat belt with pretensioner.

Caution

  • Disconnect the SRS deployment harness from the seat belt with pretensioner as soon as possible after activation in order to avoid damaging the SRS deployment harness.

20) Inspect the SRS deployment harness for damage, and replace if necessary.

21) Remove the seat belt with pretensioner from the vehicle.

22) Dispose of the activated seat belt with pretensioner through normal refuse channels.

1) Disconnect the SRS deployment harness from the seat belt with pretensioner.
