Details On DTCs

DESCRIPTION

Engine oil temperature sensor circuit range/performance problem

DETECTION CONDITION
Determination conditions
•  During the 10 min after the engine is started, the engine oil temperature does not increase above 0.9 °C {2 °F}.
Preconditions
•  Before starting the engine, leave the vehicle with the engine turned off for 6 hours or more.
•  The following DTCs are not detected:
―  engine oil temperature sensor: P0197:00, P0198:00
Drive cycle
•  1
Self test type
•  CMDTC self test
Sensor used
•  Engine oil temperature sensor
FAIL-SAFE FUNCTION
•  Not applicable
VEHICLE STATUS WHEN DTCs ARE OUTPUT
•  Illuminates check engine light. (European spec.)
•  Not applicable (Except European spec.)
POSSIBLE CAUSE
•  Engine oil leakage
•  Engine oil temperature sensor/engine oil pressure sensor connector or terminals malfunction
•  PCM connector or terminals malfunction
•  Engine oil temperature sensor loose
•  Engine oil temperature sensor malfunction
•  Use of unspecified engine oil
•  PCM malfunction

System Wiring Diagram

•  Not applicable

Function Explanation (DTC Detection Outline)

•  If the engine oil temperature detected by the engine oil temperature sensor is not rising 0.9 °C {2 °F} or more during a 10 min period after the engine is started, the PCM determines an engine oil temperature sensor malfunction and stores a DTC.

Repeatability Verification Procedure

1.  Start the engine and leave it idling for 10 s.
2.  Switch the ignition off.
3.  Leave the vehicle for 6 hours or more.
4.  Start the engine and leave it idling for 11 min.

STEP

INSPECTION

RESULTS

ACTION

1
PURPOSE: RECORD VEHICLE STATUS AT TIME OF DTC DETECTION TO UTILIZE WITH REPEATABILITY VERIFICATION
Note
•  Recording can be facilitated using the screen capture function of the PC.
•  Record the FREEZE FRAME DATA/snapshot data on the repair order.
Go to the next step.
2
PURPOSE: VERIFY RELATED SERVICE INFORMATION AVAILABILITY
•  Verify related Service Information availability.
•  Is any related Service Information available?
Yes
Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available Service Information.
•  If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.
3
PURPOSE: VERIFY IF OPERATION IS NORMAL AFTER VEHICLE COLLISION
•  Ask customer about vehicle collision experience.
•  Has the vehicle in for servicing been involved in a collision in which the air bag is deployed?
Yes
Explain to the customer that the DTC is recorded as a result of a vehicle collision.
Go to the troubleshooting procedure to perform the procedure from Step 1.
No
Go to the troubleshooting procedure to perform the procedure from Step 1.
4
PURPOSE: VERIFY CONNECTOR CONNECTIONS
•  Start the engine.
•  Does the PID value fluctuate when the following connectors are shaken?
―  Engine oil temperature sensor
―  PCM
Yes
Repair or replace the applicable wiring harness or connector parts.
Go to the troubleshooting procedure to perform the procedure from Step 1.
No
Go to the troubleshooting procedure to perform the procedure from Step 1.

Troubleshooting Diagnostic Procedure

Intention of troubleshooting procedure
•  Step 1
―  Verify engine oil level.
•  Step 2—4
―  Perform an engine oil related inspection.
•  Step 5—6
―  Verify that the primary malfunction is resolved and there are no other malfunctions.

STEP

INSPECTION

RESULTS

ACTION

1
PURPOSE: INSPECT ENGINE OIL LEVEL
•  Is the engine oil level sufficient?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Add genuine motor oil.
Perform the “ENGINE OIL DATA RESET”, then go to Step 5.
2
PURPOSE: INSPECT INSTALLATION OF ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR/ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SENSOR
•  Inspect installation of engine oil temperature sensor/engine oil pressure sensor.
•  Is the engine oil temperature sensor/engine oil pressure sensor installed securely?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Retighten the engine oil temperature sensor/engine oil pressure sensor, then go to Step 5.
3
PURPOSE: INSPECT ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Replace the engine oil temperature sensor/engine oil pressure sensor, then go to Step 5.
No
Go to Step 5.
4
PURPOSE: INSPECT IF INSUFFICIENT HYDRAULIC PRESSURE CAUSED BY USE OF UNSPECIFIED ENGINE OIL
•  Is the specified engine oil being used?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the engine oil with genuine motor oil, then go to the next step.
5
PURPOSE: VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR COMPLETION
•  Always reconnect all disconnected connectors.
•  Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the M-MDS.
