Warning
•  Handling the driver-side air bag module improperly can accidentally operate (deploy) the air bag module, which may seriously injure you. Read the air bag system service warnings and cautions before handling the driver-side air bag module. (See AIR BAG SYSTEM SERVICE WARNINGS [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) Note
•  The driver-side air bag module is installed to the steering wheel by the following connections.
―  Driver-side air bag module tab A and steering wheel hook A
―  Driver-side air bag module tab B and steering wheel hook B
―  Driver-side air bag module tab C and steering wheel hook C
―  Omega spring and steering wheel hook D
―  Omega spring and steering wheel hook E

With Heated Steering Wheel System

Note
•  When removing the driver-side air bag module, it is necessary to rotate the steering wheel. If the ignition has been switched off with the driver's door closed, the steering wheel will be locked. Perform the procedure from Steps 1-3 so that the steering wheel will not be locked.

1.  Switch the ignition ON (engine off or on).

2.  Open the driver's door.

3.  Switch the ignition off.

4.  Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait for 1 min or more. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION.)

5.  Lower the steering wheel to the bottommost position.

6.  Pull the steering wheel to furthest position rearward.

7.  Rotate the steering wheel until the service hole can be seen from behind the steering wheel.

8.  Insert the tool in to the service hole.

Recommended tool
•  TORX driver (T30 (diam. 6))

9.  Move the tool in the direction of the arrow shown in the figure and disengage driver-side air bag module tab A from steering wheel hook A.

10.  Rotate the steering wheel until the service hole can be seen from behind the steering wheel.

11.  Insert the tool in to the service hole.

12.  Move the tool in the direction of the arrow shown in the figure and disengage driver-side air bag module tab B from steering wheel hook B.

Note
•  By moving the tool, the omega spring is pressed at the same time allowing the omega spring to be removed from steering wheel hook D.

13.  Rotate the steering wheel until the service hole can be seen from behind the steering wheel.

14.  Insert the tool in to the service hole.

Caution
•  The driver-side air bag module could be damaged if it is dropped while it is completely disengaged from the steering wheel. Hold the driver-side air bag module securely with a hand while it is completely disengaged.

15.  Move the tool in the direction of the arrow shown in the figure and disengage driver-side air bag module tab C from steering wheel hook C.

Note
•  By moving the tool, the omega spring is pressed at the same time allowing the omega spring to be removed from steering wheel hook E.

16.  Remove the air bag module from the steering wheel.

17.  Using a flathead screwdriver, lift the locking device carefully, however do not remove it.

18.  Disconnect the air bag module connector.

19.  Disconnect the horn switch connector.

20.  Remove the driver-side air bag module.


Without Heated Steering Wheel System

Note
•  When removing the driver-side air bag module, it is necessary to rotate the steering wheel. If the ignition has been switched off with the driver's door closed, the steering wheel will be locked. Perform the procedure from Steps 1-3 so that the steering wheel will not be locked.

1.  Switch the ignition ON (engine off or on).

2.  Open the driver's door.

3.  Switch the ignition off.

4.  Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait for 1 min or more. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION.)

5.  Lower the steering wheel to the bottommost position.

6.  Pull the steering wheel to furthest position rearward.

7.  Verify the service hole on the back side of the steering wheel.

8.  Insert the tool in to the service hole.

9.  Move the tool in the direction of the arrow shown in the figure and disengage driver-side air bag module tab A from steering wheel hook A.

10.  Rotate the steering wheel until the service hole can be seen from behind the steering wheel.

11.  Insert the tool in to the service hole.

12.  Move the tool in the direction of the arrow shown in the figure and disengage driver-side air bag module tab B from steering wheel hook B.

Note
•  By moving the tool, the omega spring is pressed at the same time allowing the omega spring to be removed from steering wheel hook D.

13.  Rotate the steering wheel until the service hole can be seen from behind the steering wheel.

14.  Insert the tool in to the service hole.

Caution
•  The driver-side air bag module could be damaged if it is dropped while it is completely disengaged from the steering wheel. Hold the driver-side air bag module securely with a hand while it is completely disengaged.

15.  Move the tool in the direction of the arrow shown in the figure and disengage driver-side air bag module tab C from steering wheel hook C.

•  By moving the tool, the omega spring is pressed at the same time allowing the omega spring to be removed from steering wheel hook E.

16.  Remove the air bag module from the steering wheel.

17.  Using a flathead screwdriver, lift the locking device carefully, however do not remove it.

18.  Disconnect the air bag module connector.

19.  Disconnect the horn switch connector.

20.  Remove the driver-side air bag module.
