ADAPTIVE LED HEADLIGHTS [(E)]
id1510000024a4
Outline
• The adaptive LED headlights improve visibility by changing the headlight illumination range depending on the vehicle driving conditions and the surrounding conditions without switching the headlights between HI/LO.
• When the light switch is in the AUTO position and the dimmer switch is in the HI position, the headlights automatically increase or decrease the brightness to illuminate farther and wider depending on the presence of on-coming vehicles and vehicles ahead, the vehicle speed, and driving around curves.
-
Caution
-
• Under the following conditions, the ability of the forward sensing camera (FSC) to detect light-emitting objects decreases, which could result in the system not operating normally and the inability to detect vehicles ahead.
-
― Brightness of moonlight in surrounding area
― Poor visibility due to rain or fog
― Scratches or dirt on the camera lens or windshield glass
• Do not rely solely on the adaptive LED headlights, and perform the appropriate switching operation based on a visual determination of the conditions.
• If the forward sensing camera (FSC) aiming is not completed correctly, the forward sensing camera (FSC) cannot store the camera shooting angle and the adaptive LED headlights may not operate normally. When performing the following servicing, always perform the forward sensing camera (FSC) aiming. For the FSC aiming procedure, refer to the [FORWARD SENSING CAMERA (FSC) AIMING] in the Workshop Manual.
-
― Forward sensing camera (FSC) replacement
― Forward sensing camera (FSC) clip replacement
― Windshield replacement

Function
• The adaptive LED headlights determine the surrounding conditions and vehicle conditions based on the signals from the related modules and change the headlight brightness according to the determined results. For surroundings and vehicle conditions determination function, refer to the [ADAPTIVE LED HEADLIGHT CONTROL MODULE]. (See
ADAPTIVE LED HEADLIGHTS CONTROL MODULE [(E)].)
• The adaptive LED headlights have the following functions.
Glare-free high beam
-
• The glare-free high beam continuously uses the headlight high-beams while preventing the drivers of other vehicles from being dazzled by changing the headlight high-beam light distribution depending on the presence of vehicles ahead, traveling through towns and cities, driving around curves, and the vehicle speed.
Wide-range low beam
-
• The wide-range low beam enhances the visibility at intersections during the night by illuminating the side-illuminating LEDs in the front combination light while traveling at low speeds.
Highway mode
-
• The highway mode raises the optical axis of the headlight HI/LO beams to improve long distance visibility while traveling at high speeds.
Personalization feature
-
• The adaptive LED headlights can be switched between ON (operational)/OFF (non-operational) (initial setting is ON (operational)). For details on personalization features, refer to [PERSONALIZATION FEATURES] in the workshop manual.
System conditions display
• The forward sensing camera (FSC) displays the system status using the adaptive LED headlight indicator light (green), adaptive LED headlight warning light (amber), and the multi-information display in the instrument cluster, and the warning display on the center display.

Operation
Glare-free high beam
-
• The adaptive LED headlights control module determines the vehicle driving status and surrounding conditions based on the signals from the related modules, and based on the determined result, the glare-free high beam controls the on/off/increase and decrease of brightness for the LEDs installed on the headlight high beams.
• The adaptive LED headlight control module activates the glare-free high beams when all of the following conditions are met.
-
― Adaptive LED headlights personalization is [On]
― Headlight auto leveling system initial setting is complete
― Selector lever is in position other than R position
― Light switch in AUTO position and dimmer switch in HI position
― Headlight LO is illuminated
― Vehicle speed is 40 km/h {25 mph} or more
― Driving in city/town signal is not received from forward sensing camera (FSC)
-
HI beam control
-
• When the adaptive LED headlight control module receives a driving in city/town signal from the forward sensing camera (FSC), it turns off the high beams to inhibit unnecessary illumination.
-
Flicker inhibition
-
• The adaptive LED headlight control module delays the change in light distribution to inhibit flickering under the following conditions.
-
― Lost sight of vehicle ahead due to road conditions such as a sloping road
― Repeated detection/non-detection of vehicles ahead due to effect of anti-glare systems, such as vertical dividers lining median strip
― Light distribution control is performed
Wide-range low beam
-
• The adaptive LED headlight control module increases the brightness of the LEDs for side illumination in the front combination light when all the following conditions are met.
-
― Adaptive LED headlights personalization feature is [On]
― Light switch in AUTO position and dimmer switch in HI position
― Headlight LO is illuminated
― Vehicle speed is 2 km/h {1 mph} or more, and less than 40 km/h {25 mph}
Highway mode
-
• The adaptive LED headlight control module activates the highway mode when all of the following conditions are met.
-
― Adaptive LED headlights personalization feature is [On]
― Headlight auto leveling system initial setting is completed
― Selector lever is in position other than R position
― Light switch in AUTO position and dimmer switch in HI position
― Headlight LO is illuminated
― Vehicle speed is 95 km/h {59 mph} or more
― Driving in city/town signal is not received from forward sensing camera (FSC)
-
• The adaptive LED headlight control module raises the optical axis of the headlight low beams depending on the vehicle speed. For the headlight low beams optical axis adjustment, refer to the [HEADLIGHT LEVELING ACTUATOR]. (See
HEADLIGHT LEVELING ACTUATOR [(E)].)
